Chapter 39.
"Hey, Stel?" Luke asked, nudging my shoulder with his. We were sitting together at the library, both of us working on some of the last homework assignments we needed to complete before the school year was over.
"Yeah?" I turned to Luke, who quickly glanced away from me, pretending that he hadn't said anything in the first place. When Luke didn't say anything else I looked away from him, figuring that it wasn't anything important.
"Stel." Luke whispered again.
"What?" I laughed lightly, looking back at him. He continued to stare down at his paper, but I could see a small smile growing across his face.
"Hi." Luke finally tore his eyes away from the paper, his lips breaking into a full smile now.
"Hi." I responded, a little confused. The two of us were talking to each other just a few minutes ago, when I asked Luke to help me with a math problem.
"Hi." Luke repeated. He leaned in and kissed me for a few seconds, his lips moving slowly against mine.
"What are you doing?" I whispered, just curious as to why Luke was acting this way.
"Nothing." Luke said, pulling back from me. He picked up his pencil again and went back to his homework, like the past few seconds didn't even happen.
"What are you working on?" I asked, moving my homework to the side and looking at what Luke was doing.
"It's a practice SAT thing, for AP calculus." Luke shrugged, like it was completely normal for him to be doing something like this. It was funny, I couldn't even pass geometry and Luke was here taking practice SAT's for no reason.
"Why are you taking a practice SAT?" I laughed.
"For fun." Luke smiled, looking back down at the papers in front of him. "I'm almost done with it."
"Alright." I laughed, turning back to my own homework so Luke could finish his. I felt my phone begin to vibrate in my pocket so I took it out, even though I really shouldn't have since we were in the library.
"Who is it?" Luke whispered, not looking away from the papers in front of him.
"It's Michael," I laughed, answering the call. "Hello?"
"Are you with Luke?" He spoke urgently, not even saying hello back.
"Yes, why?" I asked.
"I need to talk to him about, um, about a math problem." Michael stammered, and I already knew that he was lying.
"Why didn't you call him yourself?" I groaned, not understanding why Michael decided to bother me when he didn't even need to in the first place.
"This is an emergency, Stella. Give him the phone." Michael demanded.
I passed the phone to Luke, who just rolled his eyes. "He needs help with his homework or something."
"Hello?" Luke took the phone and put it to his ear, also seeming like he was annoyed with Michael. "Do you need - hey! Michael, that is not a math problem!"
I laughed quietly to myself at the fact that I was right, Michael had lied to me. It was funny, how he thought that he could do that. I always figured him out.
"No. Jesus, Michael, I don't know. Go Google it..." Luke paused. "You already did? Michael, how is that stuff not on Google - are you using Yahoo or something?"
I tried to focus back on my homework again while Luke was talking but I just couldn't concentrate, the conversation that he was having with Michael was too funny. I loved when Michael and Luke were actually getting along with each other, because they really could be good friends if they tried. They were a good match for each other, and it was cute to see my boyfriend and my best friend interacting like this.
"No, Michael, Stella and I do not do that type of stuff." Luke said, glancing over at me. He wore a goofy half smile on his face, which made me laugh. "Oh, God...no. Michael, can't you call Calum about this? You already talked to him? He said - okay, I really didn't need to hear that."
That made me laugh even harder. Michael was obviously having some sort of issue and I honestly couldn't wait to tease him for it later. Luke sighed and eventually hung up the phone, looking relieved that the conversation was over.
"That wasn't a question about homework." Luke said, letting out a nervous chuckle.
"What did he want?" I asked, genuinely interested in what was going on.
"I'm not even sure. He was just rambling about penis's and asking random questions about condoms and stuff like that. I think he's going to have sex with some girl, I don't know." Luke shrugged.
"Why does he need to ask questions, then?" I laughed, "Michael's not even a virgin."
"Maybe this girl is special." Luke shrugged again. He sighed once more and began to pack up his stuff, shoving all of his books back into his backpack.
"Maybe it's Calum." I joked, even though I had a strange suspicion that it may be true. I didn't even know what type of relationship Michael and Calum had, I would have to ask Michael about it later.
"I doubt it." Luke laughed, standing up from the table we were at.
"Really?" I asked, "They're all flirty with each other, don't you think it could happen?"
"What could happen?" Luke questioned. He started packing up my own stuff for me, since I wasn't making any effort to move. He seemed like he was in a rush to get out of here, but it made sense, we had been at the library for almost two hours now, Luke was probably getting tired of hanging out here.
"Like, them. Calum and Michael. Michael and Calum." I giggled like a little kid at the thought of them being together. I think it would be cute.
"You honestly think they're gay?" Luke scoffed.
"You don't? You were the one that said they've probably 'accidentally' hooked up before." I said, following Luke as he walked out of the library. He was trying to carry my backpack for me but I ran up behind him and grabbed it back, putting it on my own shoulders.
"I was kidding." Luke laughed, glancing at me over his shoulder.
"Don't you think they would be cute?" I asked. Luke held his hand out for me and I took it, lacing our fingers together as we walked through the front doors of the library.
"I mean...maybe." Luke shrugged. He stopped walking and turned around to face me, leaning down so his eyes were level with mine.
"We should make a bet." I decided, letting go of Luke's hand and instead holding mine out for him to shake.
"A bet on what?"
"How long it'll take for Michael and Calum to get together!" I rolled my eyes, not understanding how Luke hadn't figured that out.
"Okay, okay. I bet it'll take them, like, 6 years." Luke said, unamused by this little game I was making up.
"6 years?" I gasped.
"I don't think they're actually gay!" Luke argued back, covering his face with his hands to hide his growing smile.
"Fine, then I'll say six months." I sighed, holding out my hand again. "Who ever is closer wins."
"What do we win?" Luke asked.
"I don't know, we have six months to think about it." I shrugged. I waved my hand in front of Luke's face, letting him know that I was waiting for his handshake so our bet could be official. "Now shake!"
"You're weird." Luke said, but he took my hand and shook it, then pulled me closer and kissed me, catching me off guard.
I pulled away from Luke after a second, pretending to be offended that he had just called me weird. "Fine, I'll just leave." I teased, backing slowly away from him.
Luke stayed still for a minute before running towards me, the cheesy smile back on his face. "Baby, don't leave me, I love your weirdness!"
-
"I need to get a mini fridge up here." Luke said, his mouth full of popcorn. We were in his treehouse again, since Luke's mom was home and he wanted us to be alone. I had an idea as to why he wanted us to be alone, but I hadn't say anything about it yet.
"How would you even do that?" I laughed, stealing some popcorn from Luke and popping it into my mouth.
"The same way I got the mattress up here." Luke shrugged, patting an empt spot on the mattress that we were laying on.
"And how was that?" I asked.
"I hired this guy." Luke laughed, "I was going to ask Calum to help me, like, last year but then I decided that I didn't want him to find out about the treehouse. I like keeping it a secret"
"Am I the only person you've ever brought up here?" I asked, just curious. I didn't think anyone else knew about the treehouse, except maybe Luke's mom, since she was obviously around when him and his dad built it.
"Uh. Yeah, I think." Luke said slowly.
"You think?" I raised an eyebrow, getting the sense that Luke wasn't actually telling me the truth. I wouldn't mind if he wasn't, if he had brought someone up here, this was his place and not mine and he could do whatever he wants with it.
"Yeah, I think. I don't remember." He shrugged again, turning over so he was facing me.
"I won't be upset if you have." I sighed, also rolling onto my side. Luke reached down and grabbed my hand, then traced his fingers over the lines on my palms.
"I don't think I've brought anyone else up here." Luke whispered, his full concentration on my hands now. Luke loved playing with my hands and fingers more than anything else, whenever we were sitting together he almost always had one or both of my hands in his, it was like he couldn't get enough of them.
"So it's like your little getaway?" I asked.
"Yeah, it's my favorite place." Luke nodded. He was still so fascinated with my fingers, and kept bending and wiggling and crossing them over each other. Every time I tried to pull my hand away he would just reach for it again, dragging it closer to him each time.
"I like it up here." I sighed. It was so peaceful, and an escape from everything else going on in the world around us. When I was up here with Luke it felt like nothing else even mattered.
"So do I." Luke laughed, "Do you remember the first time I brought you up here?"
"Was that the day that I ditched school because you were sick?" I asked, the memories slowly coming back.
"Yeah, and I was going to kiss you but I sneezed." Luke said, covering his mouth as he let out a girly giggle.
"You should have kissed me anyway." I laughed.
"I really should have," Luke nodded, "then you probably never would have dated Ashton."
"Did you have to bring him up?" I groaned. The last thing I really wanted to think about right now was Ashton, he had caused enough problems for us.
"Sorry." Luke scoffed.
"I can't believe I wasted three years on him only to find out that he's a huge asshole." I laughed at myself, feeling pathetic at the fact that I hadn't realized how much of a jerk Ashton was sooner.
"Don't beat yourself up about it, he's a good actor. If I hadn't known him from before I would have fallen into his little trap too." Luke said, biting his lip.
"I'm just so glad that after this year I probably won't ever see him again." I let out a sigh of relief, reaching up to run my fingers through Luke's hair.
"Hopefully he doesn't try to come around again. All he does is start drama." Luke sighed as well, furrowing his eyebrows at me as I continued to play with his hair.
"I'll just have Michael punch him in the face if he does." I shrugged.
"Michael can't punch anyone in the face, let alone Ashton." Luke chuckled, finally swatting my hand away from his head.
"Then I'll call Calum." I shrugged, there must be someone that I know who can punch well. I bet my brother could, if I asked him too.
"Calum's, like, part puppy. He can't punch anyone either." Luke continued to laugh, smiling back at me.
"See, Michael and Calum both can't punch people, they're perfect for each other." I grinned.
"Stel," Luke groaned, "give it up."
"They're adorable!" I huffed, not understanding why Luke didn't seem to like this idea of Michael and Calum very much.
"Calum had shower sex with that one girl, though." Luke countered, obviously in the mood to start and argument.
"That doesn't mean he's not gay." I argued. "Or bi, they can both be bi."
"Alright, whatever. You'll just have to keep me updated on them when I leave, okay?" Luke asked.
"Got it." I nodded.
"I'll be expecting daily updates about Michael and Calum's gayness." He laughed.
"Are you going to take your little space heater with you to college?" I changed the subject, glancing over my shoulder at the heater, which was shoved into a corner since it wasn't needed with the warmer weather.
"Most likely." Luke smiled, using his tongue to play with his lip piercing.
"Graduation is really soon, isn't it?" I asked. Even after Luke graduated we would have the whole summer together, but I felt like everything would just move too fast from there. It would be hard to just have a normal relationship, because Luke would be off planning things for college and getting everything together before he finally leaves. It was just happening too fast, all of it was.
"12 days." Luke nodded, swallowing down a lump in his throat. "But then we'll have the entire summer, so don't worry."
"I'm not worrying." I lied.
"Yes you are." Luke rolled his eyes, leaning in and giving me a quick kiss on the cheek. "Speaking of college, I need your help with something."
Luke sat up and leaned over, getting ahold of his backpack, and dragged it over here. He opened it to reveal the jumbled mess of papers that he never kept organized anymore and searched through them until he finally pulled out the right one. He handed it to me, trying to smooth out the crumpled edges.
"What's this?" I asked.
"It's a form that I have to fill out, because I'll be staying in a dorm next year. Like, to find a good roommate for me, I guess. I just got stuck on a couple of the questions." Luke explained.
"You're going to live in a dorm?" I questioned, handing the paper back to Luke.
"Yeah, I guess." Luke shrugged.
"I thought you said something about wanting to get your own apartment." I said, vaguely remembering a conversation we had about that.
"I was thinking about it, yeah, and my mom said she would help pay and everything but...you know, me being me, I felt that I would be better living with someone." Luke gave me a soft smile as he stared down at the paper in his lap.
"Right." I nodded, "That's a good idea."
"Or you could just move out to California with me and we can share an apartment with each other." Luke said quickly, like he was afraid of me actually hearing what he seas suggesting.
"Luke, I don't think it's that easy." I laughed quietly.
"Sure it is." He shrugged, "Who needs senior year? Just drop out and come live with me."
"But I can't just drop everything and leave without - without a purpose." I said carefully, hoping that I wasn't making it seem like Luke wasn't a purpose. Of course he was, but it just didn't seem like the right purpose. I didn't like the idea of me practically starting my life over in California just for my boyfriend. It wasn't because I didn't love Luke, because I did, it just didn't make sense for me to do something like that.
"Yeah, I get it." Luke chuckled nervously before shutting his mouth. I could see him biting at the inside of his cheek, bringing back the nervous habit he had.
"After I graduate high school, maybe." I nudged Luke's shoulder with mine and he looked up, a smile widening across his face.
"Would you really?" Luke asked warily, because we both knew that I never wanted to leave New York. I would much rather have it be Luke moving back here after I graduate, but I know that that's kind of impossible. I loved the city and I wanted to stay here for as long as I could, while Luke was willing to do anything to get out.
"Maybe." I shrugged.
"Anyway, it's asking for, like, hobbies and stuff and I have no hobbies." Luke laughed, changing the subject completely. He was good at that.
"Just write my name down." I joked, laying back down on the mattress.
"Okay, yeah. I'll just write that in my free time I like to fuck my girlfriend." Luke scoffed, quickly scribbling something down on the paper. For a second I thought that Luke had actually written that, but I glanced over his shoulder and saw that he had put down something about math and reading. What a nerd.
"That's not even what you do in your free time. You take practice SATs." I laughed.
"They help!" Luke protested, letting out a small laugh.
It only took us about 15 minutes to fill out the rest of the sheet, and then we were back to our original position, laying with each other on the mattress. Luke wrapped his arms around my waist and rolled me onto him, so I was literally laying on top of him. His fingers trailed down to the bottom of my shirt and he lifted it up, rubbing his hands over the small of my back, his hands surprisingly warm against my skin for once.
"Stel." Luke whispered again, looking up at me. He opened his eyes wide and we had a staring contest for a few seconds before Luke gave in and blinked, losing like always.
"Yeah?" I asked, once we were done staring at each other.
"Do you want me to stay?"
"I told you, I don't want to tell you." I bit my lip as I shook my head, trying hard not to let it slip what I was actually feeling.
I was honestly extremely confused about my feelings towards Luke moving away. On one hand, I wanted Luke to leave because I knew how much he needed a fresh start and that going out to California would be a great opportunity for him, but I was so worried about him being okay all on his own. The other part of me just wanted him to stay, and take a gap year or something before going to college at the same time as me, where we could make things work out better. I would just feel so guilty if he didn't go, though, because I know that deep down it's what he really wants to do.
"I don't have to go if you don't want me to." Luke said, like it was just that easy. This is what I didn't want, I didn't want him to throw all of his plans out the window just for me. Luke had to realize that even though he loved me and I loved him, a lot, the world didn't revolve around me. Other things mattered too.
"Then I want you to go." I said simply, knowing that there would be no other way for Luke to go unless I flat out told him that I wanted him to leave.
"I - I want to go, too." Luke said after a minute, "You just have to promise not to miss me too much."
"Oh, I won't." I teased, sticking my tongue out at him.
"Shut up." Luke groaned. He grabbed my hands and rolled over again, sending me flying to the other bed. Luke crawled on top of me, holding himself up with his hands on either side of my head. He leaned down, bringing his lips to my neck.
"You're going to miss me," Luke whispered in between kisses, "You're going to miss this."
"You're right." I said, tilting my head back so Luke had more of my neck available to him. One of his hands trailed down my side and to my thigh, which he gripped softly before I spread my legs apart, allowing Luke's body to fit in between them.
"You're going to miss this," Luke's lips tugged at the skin on my collarbone before moving up once more, finally reaching my own lips. He brought his lips to mine, staying there for only a second before pulling away again. "You'll miss this, too."
"You're totally trying to seduce me right now, aren't you?" I laughed softy as Luke's hand continued to caress my thigh, his lips still sucking away at my neck.
"Is it working?" Luke stopped everything that he had been doing and looked up, making me realize that, yes, it had been working.
"Yeah." I nodded, reaching up and grabbing the back of Luke's neck with one hand, pulling him down to me again.
Luke's lips met mine once more and his tongue immediately slipped into my mouth. But instead of this kiss being quick and hungry like a lot of our others, it was slower, and more passionate, like we wanted to savor this moment. And we did, I guess, because in the back of our minds we knew that there would come a day when we won't be able to do anything like this with each other, for there would be an entire country separating us.
"I am going to miss you." I mumbled while Luke's hands continued to make their way to the hem of my shirt, quickly taking it off and throwing it to the other side of the treehouse.
"Let's not talk about how much we're going to miss each other right now." Luke whispered, leaving small kisses all over my chest, and then my stomach. "Let's not talk at all."
