|~Chapter Ten~|
Fernstalk awoke with many questions. But sadly she was already out of StarClan, and her head wasn't in the clouds.
She thought of Barktwist's words.
There is no more darkness in you.
Falconprowl.
Beware of the two legs. Be afraid of them more than ever before.
What does it mean?
Fernstalk already figured out that her darkness had moved on to Falconprowl and is now slowly killing him.
But what about the two legs?
Oh well, I guess I'll never know.
That's where she was wrong.
Fernstalk padded to the Telling Trees for her first meal and then chose a medium-sized salmon.
She carried the salmon in her jaws.
I need to find Falconprowl. Now.
Thankfully, Fernstalk found Falconprowl slowly limping out of his den.
Fernstalk ran up to him and stopped him from walking by pinning him down.
She gulped.
She dropped the salmon in front of the skinny brown Tom, and walked away.
Once she was a fair amount of paw-steps away, Fernstalk turned around to look at Falconprowl.
He ate the fish.
"That's good," she mumbled to herself as she headed towards the medicine cat den.
Fernstalk and Driftrain got in a huge fight about Barktwist's death, if you remember, and neither of them like each other now.
Too bad.
"Driftrain?" Fernstalk meowed. "Falconprowl has a problem. He won't eat. He finally ate for the first time in ages, and he was limping."
Driftrain snarled a reply. "Too bad, cause when you're leader, you'll need me. You won't need your pathetic father, you loser."
Fernstalk was taken by surprise. She knew that Driftrain's reply would be harsh, but not that harsh.
She ran out of the medicine cat den, thinking about telling Treeleaper.
No. She needs rest. And no more problems on her paws.
That'll make her even more tired.
Fernstalk sighed, her mind switching back took a question that she had been thinking about forever.
Should I step down my rank? It would be a lot better if my rank was stripped away from me, since I'm so bad at leading.
I need an apprentice.
I need to figure out about what Barktwist had told me.
It wouldn't be long until she figured out Barktwist's message.
Fernstalk, her mind dazed, stared out to the big blue river. It was beautiful.
The sun was setting on the horizon, its warm yellow rays going to sleep and making way for the elegant light of the moon.
The sky was colored in different shades of orange, pink and purple.
But wait!
What was that little shadow on the water?
It was...
It was something that Fernstalk didn't know.
But...
Two-legs?!
Fernstalk saw the 'thing' that was creeping on top of the water was carrying two-legs.
Two big two-legs and one two-leg kit.
This is the omen of Barktwist.
Isn't it?
Fernstalk gave a cry of alarm which spread throughout the KestrelClan camp like a wildfire. Cats scattered around, climbing trees and leaping into ditches.
Fernstalk--uneasily--helped carry the kits.
Pondpaw, Poolpaw, Streampaw, and Waterpaw helped too.
Each apprentice grabbed a kit, leaving Fernstalk to carry Snowykit and Gorsesky or Treeleaper to carry Branchkit.
"Go!" Gorsesky yowled. "I'll carry Branchkit; the clan needs you! You are their leader, go!"
Treeleaper nodded, her eyes watering.
"Goodbye. If I never see you again, Fernstalk, be a good leader to my clan."
Fernstalk would've cried out, but her mouth was full of kit-fur.
She quickly carried Snowykit to a safe place with all the other kits before swerving around and chasing after the memory of Treeleaper.
"She can't die, she can't be taken!" Fernstalk yowled, her paws covered in dirt.
She slowed down to a halt when she saw Treeleaper getting cornered by the two-legs.
Fernstalk hissed, and then charged at full speed, determined to do whatever it takes to not lose her leader.
She adverted the two-legs' attention by acting domestic. She wrapped her tail between the kit's legs.
The two-leg kit meowed something that Fernstalk couldn't understand.
"Go!" Fernstalk hissed to her beloved leader. "Run and keep the kits safe! I'll come back as soon as I can."
Treeleaper nodded fretfully, not wanting to leave her best friend and second-in-command, and ran away.
The two-leg kit didn't notice that Treeleaper was gone, and as Fernstalk was still looking her direction, the two-leg kit picked her up!
It picked her up.
There was no escape.
Fernstalk wriggled around at first, trying to break free, but then realized that it was no good and stayed still.
The two-legs had found what they came for, and left the island to their wooden 'thing' that had brought them here to the island.
Fernstalk gulped as they left the island. She had to make them trust her enough to let her go.
And that might take a while.
She might never even see her friends or clan again.
Never again.
The words stung Fernstalk's mind.
She decided to make herself feel better by writing a little song.
Never again,
Never again.
Never again
Will I ever trust myself.
Never again
Will you ever tr-ru-st meeee.
Never again
Will I see my family.
Never again
Will I see my friends.
My beloved friends.
The friends
That I'll miss so much.
The friends
That you never want to looooooose.
The family
That you've known forever,
It's like you'll never see them ever
Ever again.
Ooouh.
Never again,
Never again.
Never again
Will I see my clan.
Never again
Will I see those eyes
Those fretful eyes
Of those kits
And their friends.
Her mind was washed away when she realized that the two-leg kit had stopped holding her. She immediately jumped off of the wooden thing and started swimming back to the island,
The two-leg kit started wailing to its parents, and they started trying to get the gray tabby warrior back.
Fernstalk had never used her legs as much as this.
Never before.
Never before,
Never before.
Never before
Have my legs hurt so much.
Never before
Has my heart broken
So much.
Never feel my heart
Come together
Again.
Never feel my bones
Touch the skin.
Never feel the soft fur
Of a father
Or mother...
Or a friend.
She rapidly swam across the deep part of the river as she sang to herself, the words calming her.
"Yyyyyaaaarh!" Fernstalk yowled as her legs felt as if they would fall off.
She swam with all of her strength until she finally reached the island again.
Her fur was drenched and cats were looking at her as if they had no clue who she was.
Fernstalk fell to the ground, shivering.
She saw a brown tabby cat race up to her.
"Oh, Fernstalk, you made it! You're safe. Oh my StarClan, what happened to you?!"
Fernstalk only had enough breath to say one thing.
"I don't want to be the deputy anymore."
And then she her eyes rolled backwards and she blacked out, hearing cries of disbelief coming from many cats.
Including Snowykit.
