|~Chapter Twelve~|

Fernstalk woke up when the moon was at its highest point.

And then, of course, her thoughts got the best of her.

Is Falconprowl sleeping well?

I hope so...

Fernstalk's gray-and-white fur seemed to shine in the moonlight as she padded out of the shadows of the trees.

Dreamkit, Barktwist, are you there?

Fernstalk felt the breeze going through her fur. She inhaled the cold air and closed her larger blue eyes.

The gray tabby felt as if nothing had ever happened in her life. No drama and certainly no killing or deaths.

Falconprowl was never her father, Barktwist never died, Dreamkit was never alive and she never knew him, and she also was never meant to be the deputy of KestrelClan.

Of course, next she thought about leaving her role as deputy for Gorsesky and becoming an ordinary warrior again.

This is when Fernstalk noticed that the breeze had stopped. Her fur smoothed down and she heard nothing. No crickets chirping or leaves rustling.

The gray tabby she-cat felt as if she needed to go somewhere that she felt safe going and knew that she could talk to someone or something.

Treeshade.

My tree.

I must go to it.

Now.

Fernstalk jogged out of KestrelClan camp and made her way to Treeshade.

When she got there, she saw a cat. To her it seemed to be an adorable kit that was the color of cream and peach.

She took a deep and quiet breath, and sneakily made her way to the kit.

As she got closer, Fernstalk could see that the intruder WAS a kit and was asleep. Also a she-kit.

Fernstalk did her best to carefully pick the kit up--she got some training from Gorsesky--and tried not to wake her up.

The gray tabby quietly carried the kit back to KestrelClan camp and put it down near her belly.

The kit yawned but didn't wake up. She snuggled with the warm and fluffy gray fur of the second-in-command of KestrelClan.

Fernstalk smiled lovingly and then gulped in fear. This kit didn't seem like it could eat prey yet.

And how did it even get on the island?

Weird.

But really, how did this poor thing end up over here?

A message from the Stars to tell me that I can indeed take care of kits?

And love them?

And have them for my own?

Fernstalk lingered on this thought as she slowly drifted away to sleep land.

It was right before the sun came up when Fernstalk woke up to the little kit paw-ing at her belly.

Fernstalk held her breath.

She poked Treeleaper, hoping that she would wake up.

And, because of the kits making her wake up easily, Treeleaper woke up.

"Whua?" Treeleaper yawned. "What's wrong, Fernstalk?"

Fernstalk used her nose to show Treeleaper the cream-colored kit.

Treeleaper gasped.

"Did you have a kit? With whom?!"

Fernstalk chuckled. "No. I went out for a walk and found this little scrap underneath a tree."

Treeleaper's expression switched from excitement and bewilderment to worry and concern.

"How did it get over here?" She asked. "Onto the island."

"That's what I was thinki-"

Fernstalk turned her blue eyes to look at the kit.

The kit yawned and opened its eyes naturally. And then it saw where it was, blinked rapidly, and then bounced up and started trying to attack Fernstalk.

"Whoah, whoah, whoah. Hold it," Fernstalk meowed sternly.

"Where am I? Why have you brought me here? Oh, how will I tell my fathers?!" the little she-kit squeaked loudly.

Treeleaper tipped her head to the side. "Fathers?" she asked.

The cream kit glared at Treeleaper. "Yes, fathers. You have something against that?!"

Fernstalk shook her head. "No, she doesn't. I'm sorry for disturbing you, but I had found you under a tree last night and brought you here because there are bad things that live in the forest."

Treeleaper nodded.

"Bad things live in these forests?" the she-kit hissed. "Then you are bad things, because you live in this forest!"

"Watch your attitude," Treeleaper stepped up for her friend. "Now, tell us your name, Peachy."

The cream-colored kit seemed to hate this remark, because she threw a tantrum.

"What is wrong with you? I'm not a peach! I don't even LOOK like a peach! What in the name of my fathers?!" She stopped for a breath. "My name is Bunny, so shut your mouths and don't eat me."

"Eating you seems like a great idea," Fernstalk joked.

Bunny scrunched up her face in hatred before storming off into the clearing.

"Don't follow me!" she yowled before screeching. "What in the name of my fathers are YOU?!"

Fernstalk and Treeleaper raced up to see what was going on. They looked at each other.

"Bunny, meet Screechwave. Screechwave, meet Bunny."

Fernstalk watched as the two cats stared at her.

"You know this freak?" Bunny growled.

Screechwave glared at her before using his paw to push her over and pin the kit down.

"I am a warrior, and you are a little kit!" he snarled. "So don't go around calling me names."

Fernstalk stepped forward a little unevenly. "Bunny, apologize to Screechwave."

"Never! All of you clan-cats are freaks! I only came to the island to enjoy the night, yet look at where I am now!"

Screechwave let Bunny go anyway. But she didn't move. She just lay there, sniffling and feeling sorry for herself.

"Bunny!" a voice called. "Oh my, Bunny!"

"Milo!" Bunny hopped into her paws again as she rushed to meet an orange Tom, who was obviously not a clan-cat.

"Butterscotch! Fathers! These clan-freaks catnapped me in the night, that's why I wasn't there with you in the morning!" Bunny wailed.

The cream-colored Tom that Fernstalk assumed was called Butterscotch turned to look directly at her.

"Is this true?" he asked, the words rolling off of his tongue.

Fernstalk stepped forward to tell her story.

"Maybe. I woke up at night and decided to take a walk. I went to a tree and found this kit there sleeping under it. I picked her up by the scruff because I didn't like the thought of waking up in the morning to find blood and cream-colored fur everywhere."

Butterscotch nodded. "So you did catnap her, but she invaded your territory first?"

Bunny stared at her father, lost for words. Her face said that she didn't want him to take the clan side.

Fernstalk nodded.

"She came on the island which is our territory, meaning that we didn't catnap her."

Milo padded to the gray tabby she-cat.

"Thank you for taking care of Bunny for a little bit. My name is Milo, how 'bout chu?"

Fernstalk wasn't sure if she should reply to that or not.

"My name is Fernstalk. It's good to meet you, Milo and Butterscotch and certainly Bunny."

She said the last bit a little bit sarcastically.

Butterscotch smirked, and dived for his kit. Bunny giggled. Butterscotch grabbed her by the scruff and signaled to Milo to follow.

"Oh, bye then, Fernstalk. Gotta go! See ya around!" Milo yowled before running up to the rest of his family.

Fernstalk shook her head.

"Weird things happen on this island, don't they, Treeleaper."

Fernstalk turned to look at Treeleaper and found her nodding her head very mindlessly.

"Now, let's get some prey and send out patrols. Shall we?"
