Better off
Leanne's POV
"It's ok. They'll be gone soon" I say softly, giving Bugsy a cuddle as I carrying him around watching the police as they search through the house and he snuggles up in my arms and looking scared of all the police walking around our house.
"How much longer is this going to take?" Micheal sighs "We do have a search warrant and it'll take as long as it takes"
"We have a doctor's apointment to at in an hour and we can't miss it" he explains. "You don't have to be here while we search the house" the officer shrugs "I'm not leaving you all alone in my house" he shakes his head. "If you have nothing to hide then what's the problem?" He says with a slight attitude.
"I can go to the apointment by myself if you wanna..."
"Your not going by yourself" Micheal cuts me off. "I'm wanna be there too, so they need to hurry it up" He says checking the time.
"Do you have the key for the attic?" An officer asks coming over to us and Micheal walks away to go and get it.
"What's going on with Lisa?" I ask as the officer is searching around the room. "She's still in custody of that's what you mean?"
"Will they be letting her go soon?"
"If we find new evidance to prove she's innocent then most likey"
"But what if you don't? What will happen to Lisa and her baby?"
"I'm afraid I can't discuss that with you. Is there anything you'd like to tell me?" He asks and I shake my head. "Are you sure? Because if you know something. It'll make things easier for you if you tell us willingly"
"I don't know anything" I shake my head. "Then why all the concern for Lisa and what happens to her?" He asks skeptically.
"She didn't say she was concerned for her" I hear Micheal and turn and see him coming back into the room. "She asked you a question, she didn't say she was concerned" he says handing the attic key over to him and he nods and leaves the room.
After 20 minutes or so the police finally finish up and Micheal and I make our way to our appointment.
"Are you ok? You've been really quiet since that officer was talking to you" Micheal asks as we're driving to the doctors and I nod. "I just feel bad that Lisa's getting the blame for this. She had nothing to do with this, but she's the one getting punished" I mumble, playing with the locket my parents gave me. "So what if she didn't?" Micheal shrugs. "She may not have done this, but have you forgotten what she did to us? You and I almost died because of her and she got to just walk away. You shouldn't feel bad for because I don't" he frowns. "But what about her baby? It's not fair her baby having to be raised in a prison" I point out. "They won't do that. They'd give it to a family member of something when it's born"
"They'll just take her baby away from her!?" I widen my eyes and he doesn't say anything for a moment then sigh, slightly.
"If she gets found guilty then yes, but you and I both know she had nothing to do with it so the police won't actually have anything to prove she did. Most likely they'll have to let her go because they won't have any evidence. They let Mia go already so they'll probably do the same with her soon"
"And then what? Their not just gonna forget about it until they find the truth" I mumble "Well their not going to are they? Because there's no evidance to find. I'm not gonna let anything happen to you I promise" he tries to reassure me.
"How come they let Mia go already?" I ask and he shrugs "I have no idea. I still don't know why she was there in the first place"
"She probably went to steal something for drug money" I mumble. "She takes drugs?" Micheal asks surprised and I nod. "Heroin mainly. She did it when we were at the brothel too, but Emma told me she saw her awhile ago on her way home and she was standing on street corners and she found out she taking that stuff all the time now and still doing the same thing Mary forced us to do" I mutter "did Emma help her out?" He asks and I shake my head.
"So she just left her there!?" He widens his eyes surprised. "Why should she help her? She never helped us. She pretended to. She's not the nice person she just pretended to be"
"How do you mean?" He frowns confused. "When Mary first took me to that place. I shared a room with Mia and she was the one than comforted me and helped me learn how to block things out and helped me get through things in the beginning"
"Sounds like she was being a good friend to me" he says confused. "That's what I thought at the beginning too. Then after me a new girl came and Mia was the same her and then with Lisa. I never realised it for a long time, but every time Mary brought a new girl in. She always sent her to Mia and she was never our friend or trying to comfort us. She was just prepping us and getting us ready"
"What about Emma?"
"At first I was scared of her and Mia had told me all this stuff about her and said it was best to stay out of her way, but after awhile I got to know her and saw that she wasn't this nasty person Mia said she was. She was a really nice girl and she knew what Mia was doing which is why she was such a bitch to her"
"How come you never told me this before?" He asks softly. "Because it doesn't matter anymore. The brothels gone and so is Mary and Mia's nothing, not now she doesn't have Mary. Now she's just a worthless junkie with an attitude" I shrug

Michael's POV
We're sat in the waiting room at the doctors and my phone starts ringing and I see it's Randy. "I'll be right back" I whisper then go outside to take the call.
"Hey, is everything ok?"
"The police have been at the office. They hadn't a warrent and stuff so I couldn't do anything to stop them"
"What did they say?" I ask nervously. "Nothing. They didn't find anything and left, but they completely messed up your office while they were searching"
"If they didn't find anything then why do you sound so nervous?" I ask and he doesn't say anything for a moment.
"When I got home there was a letter an it has you name on it"
"Is it the results? What does it say?"
"I haven't opened it"
"What!? Why? Just open it and tell me" I frown down the phone "I was gonna, but I can't I'm sorry. I think it's better you reading it. I'll bring it over and.. "
"No!" I snap cutting him off then take a deep breath and calm myself before I draw any attention to myself. "I'm at the doctors with Leanne right now and you can't bring it to my house anyway. I got it sent to your place for a reason remeber?"
"Why didn't you say that before I started talking?" He whispers "she can't hear you. I left the room to take the call"
"Ok, but what I'm a I supposed to do with..."
"Micheal? The doctors ready for us" Leanne smiles, coming outside and I nod "I gotta go. I'll call you back" I say quickly to Randy then leave with Leanne.

Leanne's POV
"Are you ok? You seemed a little upset in there" Micheal asks and I nod. "I'm fine" I smile at him through pursed lips. "You are happy about this aren't you?" He asks nervously and I nod. "Of course. I just always imagined this differently is all" I mumble. "How do you mean?" He looks at me confused "They should be here" I mumble looking at the locket, my mom and dad gave me, which I always keep with me ever since I got it back. "Their gonna miss one of the biggest milestones in my life" I mutter and Micheal doesn't say anything for a moment.
"Maybe it's best if I take you home instead of the hotel"
"But I wanted to see Emma?" I turn to him confused "I know, but you know what the doctor said. You need to stay away from stress as much as possible and with everything that's just hap..."
"I'm not going there to work. I just wanna see my friend" I cut him off. "You say that now, but once you get in there you might feel different and feel like you can cope. Which you can't" he says softly. "I swear to you I'm just going to see Emma while your busy sorting out the mess the police made at your office. I'm not gonna do any work or leave the building until you get back" I reassure him and he nods, but doesn't say anything.
"I'm not gonna tell her the truth if that's what your worried about?" I say as he parks the car and he turns to me seriously. "I know Emma's a good friend and you trust her, but swear to me you won't tell her the truth" he says nervously. "I swear"
Micheal and I sit talking for a moment then go inside. "Hey! Where have you been hiding all this time?" Emma smiles, coming over to us and gives me a hug. Then breaks away and notices the bandage on my arm.
"What happened?" She frowns confused. "I um... I had a little accident, but we can talk about it somewhere else" I mutter and she nods understandably.
"Are you sure your gonna be ok?" Micheal asks and I nod. "I'll be fine. I'll wait here until you get back" I smile and peck his lips and he kisses me back the same way then turns to Emma. "Could you do me a favour and make sure she doesn't do a single thing to do with work while I'm gone?"
"Micheal" I sigh, rolling my eyes. "I'm serious" he says to me then turns back to Emma. "The doctors told her she has to take things easy and she needs to rest"
"She won't lift a finger. I promise" Emma smiles at him and he smiles back then turns to me. "I'll be back as soon as I can. Call me if you need anything" he says then kisses me one last time then leaves.
"So what's been going on?" Emma asks once he leaves. "Why don't we go into my office and we can talk better" I smile "But I'm supossed to be working"
"Well now your on a break" I chuckle slightly and she does the same following me to my office.
****
Micheal's POV
After leaving the hotel. I quickly make my way over to Randy's house.
"How did the appointment go? Baby ok?" He asks as I walk through the door "everything went great"
"I went by your office and cleaned everything up and..."
"Where's the letter?" I cut him off, getting straight to the point and he goes into the living room and I follow behind him.
"I did wanna open it for you, but I just couldn't" he says handing it to me.
I take the letter from him and quickly and nervously open it.
****
Leanne's POV
"I can't believe it. Mary's finally gone" Emma says still in shock. "Did they say how she did it?" She asks and I shake my head. "Wow... i'm not surprised Lisa was the one that did it but... wow"
"She keeps saying it wasn't though and they don't actually have any evidence. Micheal thinks they'll let her go soon"
"Maybe not yet, but they'll find something soon enough"
"You think so?" I mumble nervously and she nods. "Of course. The police are smart and they do cases like this all the time and I doubt they'll let her go. She tried to killed you remeber? They won't have forgotten about that"
"But if they don't find anything on her. They can't keep her there can they?" I asks and she looks at me confused. "Why are you so concerned for Lisa? You and Micheal almost died because of her"
"I'm not" I shake my head. "I wished Mary dead for years, just like most of us and anybody else I'd say give them a medal, but for Lisa I hope they lock her ass up and throw away the key"
"But what about her baby? The baby didn't do anything wrong"
"So that's what's upsetting you so much" she smiles at me through pursed lips. "I wouldn't worry about that. They won't let her keep a kid in jail with her. They'll put it in care or with one of her family members. The kid would be better off without Lisa raising anyway" she shrugs and I don't say anything.
"You need to be concentrating on your baby, not Lisa's. And you need to be concentrating on yourself too" she says softly. "I'm fine" I shrug. "People who are fine don't do things like this" she says, pointing at my bandaged arm.
"Mary's gone now and not you or any of us have to be scared anymore or watching over our shoulders wondering if and when she's gonna come after us and as for Lisa. She may be arrested for this, but atleast in a way she'll be punished for what she did to you. I'm not therapist, but it's pretty clear from what you said that, that's the reason you did that to yourself"
"But I don't even rember doing it. All I remeber is going to sleep then the next thing I was in the kitchen and Micheal was yelling" I say still confused about what happened. "That's because your blocking out what happened. I know I used to tell you in the brothel to try and block things out, but that's because we had no choice. But blocking this isn't healthy and you always telling people your fine when your not isn't helping you either. You need to talk about it"
"But I don't. I fin...." I pause and Emma raises an eyebrow and looks at me unconvinced. "Your not fine. You need to talk about what happened in the fire. And we can do that now" she says softly and I nervously shake my head. "I- I don't wanna talk about it" I stutter. "It's ok. I get that it hard for you to talk about. Just relax and take your time" she says softly.
****
Micheal's POV
"So what does it say?" Randy asks and I don't say anything and continue reading the letter again to make sure.
"Micheal!?" He says getting a impatient and I hand it to him.
"It's not a match?"
"Not even close" I mutter "you know your gonna have to tell her right?"
"I know" I sigh heavily and sit down on the sofa. "Are you gonna tell her today?"
"I can't do it right now. There's already enough stress on her with Mary and the selfharming thing and the pregnancy and.."
"You can't keep this from her. It's not fair" he cuts me off. "I know that, But I can't just go over to her and blurt it out or just throw the letter and the test in front of her can I!?" I snap then take a deep breath trying to calm myself. "I really didn't want this to be true" I mutter and he walks over and sits beside me. "I didn't either. I've heard Leanne talk about her childhood and her parents, many times and I hoped it would be a mistake too but it's not and you need need tell her" he says softly "I understand she has and still is going through alot, but she deserves to know who she really is"
"How am I supossed to tell her? And we don't know what this woman is even like. She could be a drug addict or a criminal or anything. If I tell her she'll wanna know who she is and she'll try and find her. I know Leanne. She'll wanna know every little detail and.. '
"Why don't we look her up?" He cuts me off. "The letter had the woman's name on it right?" He says getting the letter Maria wrote which I asked him to keep and picks up his laptop and comes back over reading the letter.
"We'll try a Google search first then Facebook and stuff"
He says as he types in the name Carley Jones into the Google search.
It doesn't take long and we see an old news article about a woman who's baby was stolen from a hostpital.
"Are you sure that's the same Carley Jones?" I ask and he nods. "It says here she was 17 and from Indiana and she had a baby girl she named Sofia who was taken from the hostpital while she was alseep" he says reading the full article which matches everything Maria says in her letter.
"I still think it's weird it was never picked up when she was in hostpital. They keep records of blood test and stuff and doesn't Leanne get blood test when she sees the doctor about the baby?" He says still confused.
"It's because it's not in their system" I say reading the article and point to the part I'm reading. "It says here that when they checked the records, there was nothing there and the CCTV camera's for that area of the hostpital had been messed with so there was no footage of anybody going in or out the building"
"Lets look her up in Facebook" he says after we've finished reading. "I'm not gonna contact her?" I frown. "We don't have to, but we can still look up the kind of person she is now. Leanne's 17 almost 18 that's along time since that article and we need to know what she's like now" he says going into Facebook.
After looking at a few profiles with the same name. We finally get to the right Carley Jones and luckily her page isn't private.
I sit silently as I go through all her photos and things she posted.
"She seems really nice" Randy mumbles and I don't answer him and click a link to a charity she runs called 'Sofia' which is dedicated to helping people who's children have passed away and missing children.
I'm looking through the page and it has a list and photos of children who are missing and all the information they have on each person.
I see a recent post she wrote about a little boy who'd gone missing that has now been found alive and well and thanking everybody for helping find him.
I go back to the list and look through the other missing children and I see the name 'Sofia Jones' but no picture next to it like the other.
"Is that Leanne's real name?" Randy asks and I nod and read what Carely has wrote.
I don't have a photo to show you all, but this is my daughter Sofia and the reason I made this page and dedicated my life to helping others find their missing children because I too know the pain.
Her name was Sofia and was taken from me just hours after she was born and I never had the chance to take a photo of her beautiful face.
She was stolen from me so suddenly I have no other information other than she had beautiful light brown hair and blue eyes and a birth mark.
She'll be almost 18 now and may have changed her hair colour, but she has the brightest blue eyes and a little birth mark on the back of her left leg that looks like a love heart.
I have no idea who took my daughter or if she's even still alive, but I pray everyday that she is and to whoever has her hasn't harmed my little Angel and she's alive and well.
If the person who took her is reading this or someone who knows where she is. Please bring her back. She has her mommy and little brother who is praying and waiting for her to come home.
The last little information I have is that the person who took her also took a locket I had which was given to me by my grandmother which I was going to give to her when she was older. I know It's unlikely the person gave it to her and most likely sold it, but it was a golden locket and their was a photo in one side with me and my mother and the other side was empty where mine and Sofia's photo was going to be
"Does Leanne have a birth Mark or a locket?" Randy asks and I nod "both. A birth mark on the back of her left leg... Its like a heart shape" I mumble "and the the locket?"
"She said her parents gave it her on her birthday when she was a kid. One photo is her on her own and the other of Ryan and Anna holding her as a baby"
"That's fucked up" he mutters and I don't say anything. "Do you want me to print this stuff out?" He asks and I look at him confused.
"For you to give to Leanne. Like you said. She'd wanna know everything"
"Um... yeah... thanks" I mumble trying take it all in.

Leanne's POV
After about 2 hours Micheal comes back to the hotel to pick me up.
"Hey! Did you get everything done?" I smile giving him a hug and he nods. "Are you ok?" I ask concerend and he nods. "Mhm. We should probably get going" he smiles at me through pursed lips. Then goes silent for a moment.
"Did you tell her about Mary?" He mutters as we're driving home and I nod. "I told her Lisa had been arrested because they think she did it, but I didn't tell her anything else. we umm... we talked a little about the fire too" I mutter "you did?" He says suprised
"Mhm. It helped little, but didn't tell her the whole thing though"
"You started talking about it. That's the important part" he smiles and I smile back slightly. "I'd rather talk to you about it" I mumble while playing with my locket. "I wanna to you about I too" he smiles.
It was hard at first, but on the way home we talked about the fire and about the flash backs I keep getting and Micheal admits he gets them too sometimes. It helped a little when I spoke to Emma about it, but it felt different when I talked about it with Micheal because he was there and it happened to him too and he understood everything I said even when I couldn't find the right words to explain it. And I understood all the fears and the emotions he has too.
****
Micheal's POV
Words can't discribe how it felt when Leanne told me she wanted to talked to me about what happened that day. Not just because she understood my fears or the flashback, but because this was the first time Leanne has ever truly opened up to me. Usually whenever something comes up about the past or if she's worried or scared she closes up and I never tells me anything.
I've never told her about this and never will, but it really hurt me when she'd close up because it made me feel like she didn't trust me and the only time I'd know what was happening or how she felt was either through an argument or when she felt pressured and even then she'd never tell me everything, but today she really opened up to me for the first time and I didn't even have to try. She came to me and actually wanted to tell me and I can't discribe how amazing it felt that she finally trusts me and came to me and told me without feeling like she had no choice but to tell me.
When we get home Leanne goes into the living room and sits on the couch and I go in the kitchen to start dinner.
I haven't told Leanne about Carley yet because it took alot for her to talk to me about the fire and I didn't want to push it any further.
After putting the food in the oven I join Leanne in the living room and she's lay I the sofa looking at the photos in her locket. "Dinner should be ready soon" I smile through pursed lips and she nods and smiles back the same way.
"You know I don't mind cooking dinner?"
"I know but you cooked lunch. It's only fair I help out too" I point out and she sits up "I've been thinking about the restaurant I wanna open and.."
"Baby. Your supposed to be resting not thinking about more work" I cut her off. "I'm not planning on doing anything just yet don't worry. I've just been thinking about some idea's of what I want" she smiles. "I was thinking that instead of just a restruant. I do one side like a play area for young kids that way the parents can have a relaxing meal and they don't have to worry about having their children getting bored and messing around or a getting a sitter and the kids have a place where they can run around and play"
"That's a really good idea. What made you think of it" I smile then instantly regret the question once she starts answering.
"When my mom used to take me to work with her. There was always people with kids and they'd never really get the chance to relax and enjoy their meal because they were so busy trying to keep their young kids from getting bored and running around and causing a problem. My mom would help them sometimes though especially with the ones that had babies. She'd sometime watch them for people and give them their bottles and stuff while the parents were trying to eat" she smiles. "That was kind of her" I smile through pursed lips. "She was a really kind person" she smiles, looking at the picture of her in the locket. "I'm gonna name the restaurant Anna... after her"
"I'm just gonna go check on the food" I say getting up from the sofa and she nods and lies down.
After a few minutes, I go back in the living room to tell Leanne the food is ready and she's fast asleep so I get a blanket for her and let her get some rest. I gently and put it over her trying not to wake her and she stirs slightly, dropping the locket that was in her hand but doesn't wake up.
I pick it up and go back into the kitchen to go and eat and I can't help but keep staring at it. Everytime Leanne talks about her parents her face always lights up and she can't help but smile when she talks about them and it kills me knowing this is going to break her heart when I tell her.
I check on Leanne again and she's still sleeping and I take Maria's letter and the test results and the things on Carley that Randy printed out for me and sit at the kitchen table and go through every part of them looking for something that could be wrong and hope this I just a mistake and the wrong person but after reading everything over and over I still find nothing. Everything adds up and there's not a single thing that could be a mistake. It's all true and everything in her life was all a lie.
"No! Please no!" I hear Leanne panicking and I quickly rush into the living room and Leanne is nervously looking around the room.
"Are you ok?"
"No" she says "it's gone. I can't find it" she says still looking "find what?"
"My locket. It's gone" she says and I don't say anything and watch as she keeps looking then she looks like she's about to cry.
"I have it" I mumble and she looks at me confused. "You dropped it so I picked it up" I say as I take it from my pocket and she sighs in relief and smiles, taking it from me.
"Are you ok?" She asks sensing something "i'm fine" I nod. "Your tierd. Why don't you go and get in bed. You'll sleep much better than on the sofa"
"What about dinner?"
"I'll warm it up for you later" I smile "thank you" she smiles a pecks my lips and goes upstairs.
I hear the bedroom door close then go back into the kitchen and take all the papers and the letters of the table.
I stand looking at them for a moment then go over to the stove, switching it on and start burning each thing one by one.
The only thing that's keeping Leanne together right now and what got her through all the stuff Mary was putting her through is the memories she has of her parents and she's already had enough taken from her and I can't take this away from her too. It's better she doesn't know the truth.
