ghost stories

"So how did you die?" I murmured staring at the translucent figure sitting across from me.

"You go first," he responded bluntly.

"Ok ok! It's kind of boring but I'll go for it!" I shot him a small smile getting myself comfortable on the park bench.

"Spit it out."

"You know Flat Stanley right?? Those books where that kid gets flattened by a bulletin board and somehow stays alive?"

"Not really but go on," he muttered his shape distorting as a wind blew past us.

"Ok well it's sort of the same thing- except this time it's me and I don't make it out."

"You got killed by a bulletin board?"

"Oh no it was a piano- don't ask me how I didn't even know it was there- but the next thing I know I'm all translucent and my body looks like Flat Stanley. Dead Flat Stanley." I smiled at him- I could feel the harsh wind tugging at my body.

God it's cold tonight- then again when is it nor

"That's nothing like Flat Stanley."

"It's a lot like Flat Stanley," I paused, "whatever how did you die?"

"Oh it's not as simple as yours."

"You sure? I mean you look perfect," his skin was unmarked, no eyeballs missing, or bloody clothes. Everything about him looked- fine.

"Thanks," he muttered dryly.

"You look like you've died peacefully just saying- you were rich right? Your clothes don't look cheap," I continued, "I'm sure when I was alive you were my type... anyway continue."

"Uh huh," he paused, thinking. The wind tugged at his 'hair' as he began, "I was poisoned."

"Oh wow- do you know who did it?"

"I'm getting there. You're not wrong with your assumption that I had money- still who could've guessed?" He let out a long sigh.

"So? What happened?" I leaned closer to him.

"So? My lover poisoned me- told everyone I died in my sleep and had me burned right away. No investigation."

"Damn that sucks."

"Yeah, it does."

"What's your name?" I asked leaning away from him once again.

"What's yours?"

"No way Mr. I went first last time it's your turn."

"Levi Ackerman, and you?"

"Y/N L/N. That's crazy though I've haunted you! No wonder you looked sort of familiar," I laughed reaching out to pat him on the back, my hand just phasing through him.

"You haunted me?" He sat back in shock.

"Yeah, well I didn't run into you that often but it's kind of fun to pretend that you're rich and alive sometimes. It's a shame that I wasn't there when you died- I could've shown you around."

"Show me around?"

"Yeah, all the restaurants with the best-looking food, places with fancy toilets you didn't get to use when you were alive, best people to mess around with, etc."

"Uh yeah no thanks."

"Oh right, you had all those things when you were alive right?"

"Yeah."

"Well, we could still hang out together, if you want that is," I offered smiling at him.

"No thanks, Flat Stanley."

"Ah ok," I trailed off my gaze drifting back up to the full moon hanging high in the sky. "You know what the worst thing about being a ghost is?"

"No what?"

"The loneliness. Honestly, it's not that bad, all things considered, but watching people hang out together? Watching your family move on without you? God that's the worst." The branches of the trees above us rattled in the wind, nearly drowning out my words.

"Why don't you just hang out with other 'ghosts'? We can't be the only dead people in this city." He murmured following my gaze.

"You're kinda funny."

"I'm not."

"Ok whatever," I paused, "there aren't many 'ghosts' who choose to stick around- and those who do are hell-bent on revenge. You're different though- I can tell."

"What makes you say that?" He moved in a little closer.

"Oh well, when you talked about your lover it wasn't the usual- 'i need my revenge' bullshit. I mean you seemed pretty unbothered for someone who was murdered"

"I guess you're right."

"What are you sticking around for anyway? Honestly, if I were you I would've passed on by now."

"You first- why haven't you passed on? Why are you still here if you don't want revenge?"

"How could I get revenge on a piano?" I laughed laying down on the cool grass.

"You know that's not what I meant"

"No one meant to kill me. It was just an accident, wrong place wrong time." I murmured. "To tell you the truth I'm waiting for someone."

"Your lover?"

"Oh, no way- I didn't have anyone like that when I was alive. That's why I'm waiting for someone to pass on with me- so I won't be lonely you know?" I turned to the side meeting Levi's stare. "What? Stop looking at me like that I know it's stupid!"

"Not really," he mumbled. "I think I'm waiting for something like that as well. Trust- I lost it when I-"

"Yeah."

"I trusted her- but look how that turned out. I don't want her dead I just want someone to prove me wrong, proof that I can trust again."

"I get that."

"Yeah- wish me luck."

"Hey- you're already dead! At least you can't be killed again by the next one."

"Thanks."

"You know- if it makes you feel any better. You're really attractive I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to help you."

"Not you?" He asked, his eyes trained on mine.

"I thought you-"

"I thought you were Flat Stanley," he laughed dryly.

"Hey! I was just trying to make you comfortable."

"It's fine if you don't want to help me but- I could at least offer you company. Help you pass on..." he trailed off.

"You know what that means right?" I whispered staring through my hand.

"Yeah, I'll have to pass on as well right?"

"And you're willing?"

"As long as you help me."

Pause

"Hey."

Cold

"Yeah?"

but I felt warm

"Kiss me."

Almost as if I was human again.

For a quiet second a heart I shouldn't have started beating.

Finally
