Chapter Six
We had gotten done eating and Matthew was clapping his hands together. They said they had some important things to tell me. I was nervous though I didn't know why. I knew that it had to do with my powers.
"Alright Ms. Green." Matthew smiled at me and I grimaced. "Tell me, is there anything abnormal that you can do?"
I kind of openly gaped at him before glancing to Colin who looked as irritated as all everything. "Uh.. I can read minds on occasion?"
Matthew nodded. "Yes, yes. But is there anything else?"
"No.. What is this? Why are you people acting so weirdly?" I nearly demanded.
"Ace.." Colin said in a low voice. I glanced at him and he gave me a look that said to watch myself. Matthew must have noticed the exchange because he just laugh good-naturedly.
"We've got a lot to talk about, Ace." Beside me Colin groaned into his hands.
"Ok," I said unsure, "shoot."
Matthew nodded. "Ace, I am Matthew Codwell. I run an organization bent on protecting the supernatural. Currently we have six subjects. Yourself being one of those six. Colin was assigned your protector when he was old enough. Before that you had a different protector.
"These protectors are slightly complicated, okay me explain. When a supernatural child is made known we send an adult out to watch over that child. They do not make themselves known to anyone. However when that child becomes older they are assigned a protector that is just a few years older than them. For example, you are sixteen and Colin here is eighteen. He has been you protector since you were eleven."
I blushed at the thought of Colin watching me for so many years and instantly was confused by the blush. Sure he was good looking but I only just met him!
Matthew continued, "the other five are of varying ages around your age. The youngest is only fourteen and she will not know about any of this until she is seventeen. Which would have been the same for you...however there were complications." At this Matthew glared at Colin who just gave him a dirty look. I was slightly shocked that he would act towards his boss in such a manner.
"The oldest," Matthew cleared his throat, "is nineteen. You will meet them when the time is right. Currently you are still a year from maturity therefore your powers have not come out and developed fully so I am intrigued by what you might be able to do.
"Anyway, there is a very interesting similarity between all of you. Though I believe that it will help you in your mission. Oh yes Ace, you have a duty here. You must know by now that you are not completely human. We have protected many supernatural folk in just the past two hundred years. We know what we are doing however things have gotten out of control. I believe that is why you all are here. To help us fix the mess we helped make."
By this point I was more confused than ever. It seemed like a lot of information but then again it didn't. It really just seemed like it was a bunch of riddles and I felt like I was being lied to.
I sighed. "How did you find out about us?"
Matthew pursed his lips. "Well dear, see that is an interesting story. See, all of the supernatural know about us and know we will protect them if they need it. I assume that whomever brought you here contacted this company. However I don't know for sure given it was my father in charge then but when he died a good nineteen years ago it was passed to me."
I nodded. "What other powers do the others have?"
"It all starts out the same so far. The older ones who have matured have many different powers. From force fields to flight, from super strength to unbelievable beauty/charm that they can turn on and off. I believe all the older ones are able to manipulate the elements. Very similar powers. Though it always starts out with telepathic powers. The youngest has telekinesis. You obviously have telepathy."
I nodded again while wondering if I could move things with my mind. Although my telepathic powers already didn't work too well.
The silence was abruptly broken by the sound of my phone ringing. It started playing Miranda Cosgrove's 'Wrong' and I blushed. It was the ring tone I set for Dean.
"Sorry, I really have to take this." I apologized sheepishly to Matthew.
He just smiled, "go ahead."
I smiled back and walked to the far side of the room while answering the phone. "Hello?"
"ACELIAS GREEN!" Dean yelled into my ear.
"What!?" I snapped. "I am holding the phone against my ear no need to yell! What do you want?"
"Where the hell are you?"
"I'm out shopping trying to find a new cardigan." I used the lie that I told Dad.
"That's bull Ace! And you know it! Where are you?"
I hesitated before I turned and walked back to Matthew and Colin. "Hold on Dean." I out my phone on mute.
"He wants to know where I am."
"Does he know about you powers?" Matthew questioned thoughtfully.
I shook my head. "No. Nobody knows."
"Lie to him. You have to." Colin said and Matthew gritted his teeth.
"He knows when I lie. I've run out of excuses and I can't say I'm out with a friend because I'm grounded."
Colin groaned and I glared at him. Who did he think he was getting frustrated at me? Honestly, he is so irritating and I had only know him for barely twenty four hours. I realized that I was going to have to do something that I knew I would regret.
Picking up my phone I un-muted the call. "Dean. I'm sorry but I can't tell you." I waited while Dean yelled at me. "I'm sorry but you are going to have to deal with it." He yelled some more. "I'm sorry but I can not tell you... Because it's confidential!! Get over yourself Dean! Love you, I'll call you later." I hung up on him.
I didn't dare turn around to face Colin and Matthew. I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see Matthew standing behind me. "Come on, we still have more to talk about.
~~~~
Matthew had told me that protectors are there for the person they are protecting. Both physically and emotionally. It is possible that the stress of the person that the protector is assigned to becomes to much and they will need to let it out. So, the protectors are trained therapists. By this point in Matthew's speech I was bored.
Finally it was time for Colin to take me home. "Well it was nice meeting you, Ace."
I smiled and shook his hand. "Same to you, Matthew. And thank you for answering the questions I could think of while I was here."
"No problem. And you know that you can have Colin bring you back down here if he can't answer some of your other questions."
"Thank you." I smiled and glanced at Colin. He looked irritated and I couldn't figure out why.
Colin sighed and wrapped and arm around my waist glaring at Matthew. "Come on, we don't have the time to continue to talk. Let's go!" He pulled me out of the office and in to the elevator.
Once we were in the elevator he let go of me. I glared at him, "what the hell is your problem?"
He saw my expression and rolled his eyes but didn't speak to me. The elevator ride was settled in uncomfortable silence. So was the walk to and most of the ride in his car. Because I was so distracted this morning I decided to enjoy the sights. We drove mostly along the coast and the ocean was magnificent during this time of the year. The waves were huge and I wished it wasn't cold so I could go surfing. Yes, my dad taught me how to surf before he taught me how to ride a bike.
Colin pulled off the rode were driving and on to the interstate so all I had to to look at was billboards, palm trees and other cars. Sighing I pulled out my phone and started to play on it. However the games I downloaded quickly got boring. "Kkkk.." I groaned. Colin side glanced at me. It wasn't the first time though.
"You ok?" I glared at him before nodding. He seemed to be in a better mood although it felt like we had just switched moods.
"Ace?" When I didn't answer he tapped the breaks so I was jerked forward.
"The hell?" I demanded as he drove again.
"What's your problem?" I was shocked by him.
Seriously? Seriously? What's my problem? You are my problem!!" He turned and stared out the window. I could feel Colin's eyes on me but I didn't turn around.
"How am I your problem? Does it have something to do with the fact that I was irritated back at the office? And if that's why and you are wondering about that you could just ask instead of acting like a two year old!" by this point we were already turning on to my street.
We pulled up in front of my house and I made to get out but Colin locked the doors and pulled me over to him. "Get off Colin!" I jerked from him and fumbled with the lock.
"Ace I know this upset you. I've seen it before but my attitude in the office was not directed towards you. It was towards Matthew because of all the crap he gave me in front of you and the crap he'll give me later. I'm not mad at you and I'm sorry my mood rubbed off on you." I just stared at him and then another question popped into my mind.
"Do you ever get a break from watching me? And do you watch me all the time?" He seemed confused by the change of subject but went along with it and answered my questions.
"Not really, no, I don't often get a break. I normally only get a break when your dad is home. As for your other question I basically just answered that. But don't worry I don't watch you when you're in your room. It is mandatory that I check on you when you go to bed and when you get up." I pondered that for a minute.
"What do you mean? When you said that about my dad? And where do you sleep?"
He chuckled at my flow of questions. "You're dad is in on the program. He knows that you are special and that he has to protect you. Especially when you are home with your mother. That's where I am always watching. Like that fight the other day. And I sleep on the ground mostly."
I stared at him while I processed that. "Ok, three things and then I'll go inside. One, you sleep on the ground!? I nearly screeched at him and he only nodded and gestured for me to continue so I did. "Second, my dad is in on all this? No wonder he's been so weird lately. He knew I was coming close to the time I would learn about this then?" Colin nodded his head again and sighed.
"Should I let Dad know that I know?"
"Mm, I don't know. I'll talk to Matthew. As for now isn't there a third thing you wanted to ask?"
I realized I had only covered two of my three points and I shrugged, "nope. See ya." I quickly got out of his car and ran into my house.
