"And what if you opened your heart again?"
"We both know that's not going to happen"

Kenna stood in her apartment. She knew that she hadn't slept at all. She had been thinking about Bobby. She knew that he was her boss. She needed to take her mind off what she was feeling. Which was inappropriate.
Kenna got changed into her gym clothes and left her new apartment. This time she had gone for one with a concierge. Knowing she wasn't risking anything happening again.
She arrived at the firehouse to use the gym there. Knowing she just needed to get her mind off the fact she had a small crush on her boss. Nothing could happen between them.
She groaned as she tried to erase the thoughts in her head. It was too much for her at the moment. All she needed was to focus on her career and saving lives.

Bobby walked into the changing rooms. He shut the door as quickly as he opened it. Kenna was stood there in her sports bra and shorts. "Sorry," he mumbled.
"No it's okay Cap. I wasn't expecting anyone else to be in so early. Do we have a call?" Kenna asked.
Bobby shook his head. "No. I thought I'd do a check on the water down here."
"Oh. Okay. Well, there's plenty stocked up. Plus I'm pretty sure we have water upstairs too," Kenna joked as she slipped on her uniform.
Bobby looked up as she walked out of the room. Her face had a glow which lit up her eyes. "Oh. There's someone you haven't met yet. My sister."
Kenna smiled. "I didn't know you had a sister."
"She's been off. On some personal leave," Bobby told her. He saw the curious look on her face and smiled. "Her name is Ellie."
"Oh I like that name. My mom wanted to call me Marie. I don't think suit Marie. My dad decided on my name. Then the both of them turned into overgrown asshats," Kenna shrugged.
"The nickname Kenna. Where did that come from?" Bobby questioned.
Kenna smiled. "My name is Kenadee. Instead of being called Kenny for short. I decided to be different and go with Kenna. I've always been told I stand out. My mom couldn't figure out why I wanted to run into burning buildings and risk my life when I could stay home, be married and become a glorified sex doll for a guy who probably can't make a girl orgasm," she said.
Bobby laughed a little. He looked to her and nodded. "Well we should probably head up. I think the rest of the team will be here shortly," he told her.
"You got it dude. Oh! If there are any callouts about animals up a tree, then I'm not it. I refuse to climb a ladder for an animal today," Kenna said.
Bobby nodded and smiled. "Noted. We'll save that for Buck," he said with a little wink to her.
Kenna watched as he walked off. She knew she needed to maintain some distance between them. Especially so she didn't want to ruin what she had here.
"So cap. Tell me about your sister."
Bobby smiled. "She's been through a lot. We're a lot closer than my brother and I. Things have been tough for her. She was there for me at my lowest. And vice versa. She's been my rock. She caught me at my lowest time and I can never repay her for that," he told her.
"Sounds like you're both pretty close."
"We are."
Kenna smiled, her eyes twinkling which Bobby noticed. He walked off. Knowing he needed to get his thoughts off of her.

Bobby was making breakfast when the team arrived. Kenna was sitting on a stool reading a magazine. Buck walked over. "Oh Kenna, my Kenna."
Kenna raised her eyebrows. "I am not your Kenna. Don't even go there Buckley," she said. She smiled as she saw a dark haired girl walking up. "You must be Ellie."
"Yeah. My brother here told me about you. Kenadee right?" Ellie asked as she looked to her.
"Call me Kenna. Kenadee reminds me of my parents. Can't stand the asshats," Kenna told her with a smile. She could see that Ellie was like her brother.
Ellie smiled. "So Buck is flirting with you too?"
"He is indeed. Doesn't work with me. Don't think he understands that given my severe issues, I have issues of another kind. But that's a story for another day," Kenna joked.
Ellie laughed and nodded. "Daddy issues?" She asked. She raised her eyebrows as she saw Bobby looking up over at Kenna. "Interesting."
Kenna blinked a couple of times. "I never said a thing."
"Oh you didn't have to," Ellie said as she walked off.

The team had been called out to a car accident. A truck had crashed into an SUV. Leaving a mom and her child trapped. Bobby turned to Kenna. "I need you keeping the mom calm. She's lost circulation to her legs. The more she moves, the more chance she'll have to have them amputated," he said.
Kenna nodded and walked over to the car. She smiled. "Ma'am. My name is Kenna. I'm with the LAFD. I'm going to need you to keep calm and not move so much," she told her.
"My baby!"
Kenna smiled. "Your son is fine. He's fine. My team are going to get you both out. But for them to do that, I need you to stay calm."
"Not my son! I'm pregnant," the mom sobbed.
Kenna paled. She got out the car and ran over to Hen and Chimney. "The mom. She's pregnant. She has something penetrating her abdomen. But I don't think she can feel it," she told them.
Hen and Chimney both shared a look. Kenna stood there as they ran over. Bobby came over. "What happened?" He asked.
"The mom in the car. She's pregnant. She has a piece of metal penetrating her stomach. She can't feel it. That baby has no chance of surviving," she mumbled.
Bobby sighed. He looked to her. "Hen and Chimney know what they're doing. You, me and Ellie are going to get the little boy out. Buck and Eddie are sorting the truck driver," he told her.
Kenna nodded. She walked back over to the SUV and got into the back with the little boy. She smiled to him. "Hi cute angel. I'm Kenna. I'm gonna help you okay?" She said.
"I'm cold."
Kenna nodded. "I know sweetie. It's gonna be okay though. I'm not going to let anything bad happen. I promise," she said.
"Where's my mommy?"
Kenna looked over to see the mom had been extracted from the car but she was being given CPR. She turned back to the little boy. "She's over there. She's... she's fine," she said.
She knew the little boy was going to die if they didn't get him out and quick. Bobby walked over to her. "It's taking time to get him out."
"You need to hurry."
"Kenna. A word," Bobby said. He saw the look on Kenna's face. He took her to one side. "The mother passed away. There was nothing they could do for her. They tried."
Kenna felt tears but quickly wiped them away. She nodded. "I don't think it's long until that little boy dies. There's no hope is there?" She asked.
Bobby shook his head. "Hen is going to takeover with him. You need a breather," he told her.
Kenna sighed. She was about to speak when Hen walked over. "He just passed away. He wanted to tell his mom he was sorry," she said.
Tears immediately poured down Kenna's cheeks. She wiped them away. "That's unprofessional. I'm sorry," she mumbled as she walked off.

Ellie walked over to her brother. She smiled to him. "So. Kenna. She seems... unique. I like her."
"Eleanor. Don't."
Ellie smiled. She looked to him and sat down. "Oh come on. You can't stay single forever Bobby. I know losing Marcy and the kids was hard. I know better than anyone how that feels. But you can't blame yourself forever. You know that as well as I," she told him.
"Eleanor."
"And what if you opened your heart again? You can love again," Ellie said.
"We both know that won't happen," Bobby said as he started to make lunch for the team.
Ellie rolled her eyes. "Why not? Give me three good reasons why you can't be happy. Kenna seems like she would be great for you," she told him.
"The age gap. She is 28. The fact her last relationship was an abusive one. And the fact that I don't deserve happiness after what I did," Bobby said.
"You're talking crap now Robert. You're just thinking of reasons why you can't be happy. Maybe Kenna needs an older man. Someone to show her real love. I mean, considering her ex tried to burn her alive..."
"Stop it Ellie. Go clean the engine or something," Bobby said. Knowing he didn't want to have the conversation with his sister.

Kenna was at the punchbag. She sat down and tried to fight off the tears that were threatening to fall. She looked to see Buck as he walked in. "Buck I'm not in the mood for flirting or whatever it is you came to do," she mumbled.
"No. I didn't come for that. Was this your first time you lost someone?" He asked.
Kenna shook her head. "No. I've lost people before. This one just hit differently. I don't know why. I'm fine though. It's all fine. I just need to do this workout and I'll be up," she said.
Buck looked to her. He knew he had a crush on Kenna. But he also knew it wasn't reciprocated. He knew he wasn't going to push her though. "It's not easy. I lost someone too. Fell from a rollercoaster," he told her.
Kenna smiled slightly. "I heard about that. It was all over the news. Thanks. For coming to check on me," she said.

The team were on their second call out of the day. Bobby looked to see Kenna who wasn't as talkative as she usually was. He walked one to her. "Want to see me send Buck up a tree? Little girl climbed up there hiding from her brother."
"Hiding?"
"Hide and seek. Nothing like that."
Kenna nodded. "Bet he didn't get a possum," she mumbled as she walked over to the tree. "Hi cutie. I'm Kenna. We're gonna get you down."
"Did I win?" The little girl asked.
Kenna nodded. "Yeah you won sweetie," she said. She saw Buck walking over with the ladder. "See this funny looking guy here? He's going to get you down. You don't have to worry now."
"Yay! I win!"
Kenna took a step back. She walked over to stand with Ellie. "Your brother mentioned you'd been off on personal leave. Are you okay?" She asked.
"Yeah. It's all fine. Just... something happened a while back. So I'm sort of dealing with that," Ellie told her.
Kenna nodded. She smiled. "You know that I haven't known you long. But you can always come and talk to me. I won't judge. Think the team needs more female solidarity," she joked.
Ellie smiled. "Thanks Ken. I can call you Ken?" She asked.
"Yeah I don't see why not."

Kenna walked up into the kitchen area. She saw Bobby standing there making food. "Are you making food again?" She asked.
"If I don't, no one else will. Lasagne. I remember you said you wanted to try it. So for the pro he," Bobby told her.
Kenna grinned and nodded. "Well I love Italian food. It's my... aphrodisiac. Makes me go crazy," she teased as she looked to him.
Bobby glanced over at her. He smiled. "I'll keep that in mind," he said as he winked.
Kenna knew all too well that things were about to change for her. But she had no idea how she was about to find herself falling for the captain of the 118. And how he was feeling the same.
