Luke woke up in a hospital bed.

The first thing he noticed was how loud it was in the room, like everyone that was in there was yelling at each other. Luke slowly opened his eyes and sat up a little, even though it kind of hurt for him to move.

"Calum, look, he's alive!" Michael said and pointed to Luke, who was still confused. He couldn't remember how he got there or why he was in the hospital or what happened to him the night before.

"He's been alive this whole time, you idiot!" Calum yelled. He slapped Michael on the back of the head, making Michael let out a big groan.

"Can you two stop yelling, please?" Ashton yelled, standing up from a chair on the other side of the hospital room.

"He started it!" Calum and Michael both yelled, pointing at each other.

"Shut up!" Ashley, who was the last person Luke expected to see there, stood up, walking over to where the other boys were standing.

Luke sat there silently and watched his friends argue with each other, still wondering how he got there and why he was in a hospital bed with all of these weird tubes hooked up to him. The last thing he remembered was walking from Ashton's house to Ashley's, but after that there was nothing.

"Can someone go get his mom and tell her that he's awake?" Ashton asked, taking charge of the situation like he normally did.

"I'll do it." Calum said and began to make his way towards the door, but Michael grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and pulled him back.

"I'll do it." Michael insisted.

"Both of you do it, oh my God." Ashley groaned, rolling her eyes.

"Fine." Michael snapped, glaring at Ashley as he and Calum walked out of the hospital room and into the hall.

Ashton and Ashley just sat there and stared at Luke, who still hadn't said anything. He was confused, he wished that one of them would just tell him what was going on.

"How are you feeling?" Ashton finally spoke, breaking the silence. He awkwardly rubbed the back of his neck, seeming a little uncomfortable. Luke was also uncomfortable, he had no idea what happened.

"Uh, I'm confused." Luke said slowly.

"You passed out." Ashley informed him, barely making eye contact with Luke as she spoke.

"Yeah, I figured that out." Luke said sarcasitcally. He didn't know what had happened, but he did know that he was still mad at Ashley for what she did.

"Sorry." Ashley mumbled.

"I'm going to go see if I can find something to eat." Ashton said slowly, beginning to back out of the room. "Do either of you want anything?"

"I'm good." Luke and Ashley said at the same time. Ashton nodded and walked out of the room, leaving Ashley and Luke alone.

"I'm sorry." Ashley said as soon as Ashton was gone, walking over and shutting the door. "I got scared, I called an ambulance and they took you back here and you got your stomach pumped."

"Okay." Luke nodded slowly, not knowing what else he was supposed to say. He was more mad at Ashley than anything else, and he wasn't taking the time to think about the fact that she'd probably saved his life by getting him to the hospital. He was just mad at everything.

"Are you sure you're feeling okay?" Ashley asked, pulling up a chair next to the hospital bed and sitting down next to Luke.

"Yeah, I'm fine." Luke grumbled, folding his arms across his chest. "I really wish you wouldn't have brought me here, though."

"Luke, you passed out, I didn't know what to do - "

"You're supposed to call Ashton when I pass out! Ashton always finds a way to wake me up. You didn't need to call anyone else, I would have been fine if you just called Ashton!" Luke raised his voice at her, failing to realize that he would probably be dead right now if it wasn't for Ashley.

"I did call Ashton! He came over with Michael and Calum and they couldn't wake you up so I got scared and called 911, I'm sorry!" Ashley shook her head, looking confused at the fact that Luke was actually upset about this.

"And why is my mom here? Why would you call her?" Luke questioned, "I'm going to get in so much trouble now, I probably won't be able to leave my house for the next month."

"Well would you rather be dead?" Ashley snapped.

Luke stayed silent.

Neither of them had time to say anything else before the door opened again and Liz walked in with a doctor, Michael and Calum following shortly behind them.

"Hi Mom." Luke said quietly as his mom walked over to him, looking as if she was about to burst into tears.

"Hi sweetie." Liz said softly and ran her fingers through Luke's hair, pushing it off of his forehead. She didn't seem like she was mad - for now. Luke knew that as soon as they got home she'd ground him for the rest of his life.

"Hey, Luke, how are you feeling?" The doctor asked, sitting down on the edge of Luke's bed. He reminded Luke of Mr. Walker; he looked like he was too young for his job and probably didn't know what he was doing.

"I'm alright, my stomach hurts a little." Luke shrugged.

"Oh, that's normal." The doctor said casually, waving his hand around in the air. He looked down at the clipboard in his hands. "You had quite a lot of alcohol in your system, but it looks like everything's going fine now. The fact that you have tachycardia really didn't help either, but - "

"Wait, what's tach-tachycardia?" Luke asked, not sure if he was even pronouncing the word right.

"It's when your heart has a faster than normal heart rate when at rest. It can cause problems when you drink too much alcohol, which is exactly what you did." His doctor explained. "Didn't you know that? It's here in your records, you must have seen a doctor about it before."

"He has." Liz said, speaking up. "I took him in when he was younger because he was complaining about it, they told me it wasn't anything to worry about."

"It usually isn't a very big deal at all, people rarely experience symptoms from it, I think it was just the high amount of alcohol Luke had in his body that made his heart freak out like that." He continued.

"I see." Liz nodded. She was definitely going to kill Luke when he got home. He may have survived alcohol poisoning and tachywhatever but there was no way he was going to survive his mother.

"I'm sorry." Luke mumbled, beginning to feel kind of bad aboutt this. He didn't necessarily feel bad about what he did, but he felt bad for putting everyone else through this. Luke stayed quiet for a second, waiting to see if anyone else had anything more to say. "When can I go home?"

"Well you got here pretty late last night, or rather very early this morning, and since you're just waking up now I think you should spend the rest of the day here, just in case." Mr. Doctor Man shrugged, still staring down at the papers on his clipboard. "Yeah, you should be able to go home around dinner time."

"Okay." Luke nodded again, not wanting to talk to his doctor or his mom or anyone else for the moment.

"Alright, I just wanted to get you and everyone else updated. Any questions?" Mr. Doctor Man said, standing up from Luke's bed and quickly making his way towards the door. Everyone in the room shook their heads, signalling that they didn't have any questions. "I'll have a nurse come back in and check on you in a little while."

"Alright." Luke said quietly, not knowing what was going to happen after his doctor left. He felt kind of safe with him in the room, because he knew that no one would yell at him with a stranger in the room.

"Luke." Liz let out a sigh once the doctor was gone, running her fingers through Luke's hair again.

"Are you mad at me?" Luke whispered, looking up at her innocently. Everyone ear in the room was either sitting in a chair or standing and staring at their phone, not paying any attention to Luke and Liz.

"I'm not mad, I'm disappointed." Liz said and sighed again, which didn't made Luke feel any better at all.

"Ugh, that's even worse." Luke groaned, leaning his head back on the pillow.

"We'll talk about this later, Luke, after we get back home." Liz said and backed away from the bed. "I'll leave you alone with your friends now, I think you all have some talking to do."

"No, Mom..." Luke trailed off, not wanting his mom to leave him. She made him feel safe too, and he was scared that if she left everything would go downhill again.

"I'll come back in a little while." Liz said before leaving the room, shutting the door behind her.

The whole room was silent for the next few minutes, all five of them staring at each other and trying to think of something to say. Luke didn't want to speak to them, he was mad at them and he assumed that they were mad at him too.

"You're such an idiot." Calum finally spoke, and Michael slapped him on the back of the head. "What? It's true!"

"Don't make him feel bad." Michael snapped, smacking Calum again.

"He should feel bad. He fucking scared all of us." Calum said, turning to face Luke. "You're such a fucking idiot, Luke."

"I know." Luke nodded.

"We told you that if you kept drinking like this you were going to hurt yourself and that's exactly what happened." Calum continued. Ashton and Ashley both remained silent, staring down at their feet.

"Calum..." Michael trailed off, not wanting to get him started.

"I've always told you, haven't I Luke? I've told you that you're going to hurt yourself one day if you keep this up!" Calum went on. "But do you listen to me? No, you don't! You never - "

"Can you stop, please?" Michael begged Calum. Luke was confused with how Michael was acting, he was almost being too nice, but he didn't want to try and worry about that right now. He was sure that they'd talk later.

"No, I'm not going to stop because if someone doesn't tell him then he might just do it again and - "

"Calum, seriously!" Michael yelled, cutting him off. "He doesn't need this right now, we can yell at him later!"

Luke hated seeing them like that. He didn't want his friends to fight because of a stupid mistake that he made, that wasn't fair to anyone. Luke had already ruined his friendships with everyone, he didn't need to ruin their friendships with each other.

"I want to yell at him now!" Calum said stubbornly, stomping his foot on the ground. "He scared us. I thought he was dead, Michael, and so did you!"

"This isn't the right time or place to yell at him for this." Ashton spoke up, saving the day once again.

"I-I'm really sorry, guys." Luke finally spoke up, trying to end the argument between Michael and Calum.

"Yeah, you should be." Calum snapped.

"Calum!" Everyone else in the room yelled, silencing him.

Calum took one last look around the room before letting out a big groan and storming out, slamming the door shut behind him.

"It's okay, Luke, don't listen to him." Michael sighed.

"He was acting like that last night, too." Ashley added quietly, like she was afraid to speak up.

"He's scared." Ashton said, finally looking up from the floor. "He's been like that since last night, he thinks this is his fault."

"But-But it's my fault." Luke said softly, shaking his head. Calum didn't do anything, he was just mad and he yelled at Luke but that didn't mean he'd done anything to force Luke to do this to himself. This was Luke's fault.

"He freaked out and yelled at you and then you left Ashton's house because of him." Michael explained, letting out a sigh. "He thinks that maybe this wouldn't have happened if we'd just made you stay."

"It's my fault." Luke repeated.

Michael nodded slowly, like he was agreeing with Luke but didn't want to say anything out loud. "I'll be right back." He said quietly, and then left the room.

Luke swallowed hard and looked between Ashton and Ashley, not knowing what he could possibly say to make any of this better. He was an asshole, he didn't even deserve to have his friends forgive him for what he did.

"A-Ashton, I'm sorry." Luke said nervously, still scared of the older boy. "I'm really sorry for all of the things I said to you, I don't know what I was thinking,"

"You were drunk." Ashton said, as if it was just that simple. As if he was going to forgive Luke just like that.

"That's not an excuse." Luke said, shaking his head. "I acted like a jerk and you didn't deserve to have me treat you like that, I'm sorry."

"It's fine, Luke." Ashton mumbled. He stood up from the chair he was sitting in and ran his fingers through his hair. Ashley remained in the chair next to Luke's bed, staying silent,

"I really am sorry, Ashton, I shouldn't have done that." Luke continued.

"It's alright, Luke, I'm just glad you're okay." Ashton said and began to walk towards the door. Luke didn't feel right about this, he didn't think he deserved to have Ashton forgiving him for all of the things he said. He thought that maybe Ashton wasn't really okay with this, but then again maybe Luke was wrong. "I'm gonna go check on Calum."

"Okay." Luke nodded slowly, even though he was terrified to be left alone with Ashley again.

Ashton nodded one more time and then left the hospital room.

Luke shifted his weight in the bed and turned so he could see Ashley better. She looked nervous, and also like she hadn't slept in a very long time. Luke felt bad.

"I'm sorry." Luke said after a few minutes of them just staring at each other. "I don't remember what I said to you at your house, but I can only imagine that it was pretty bad."

"I deserved it." Ashley said quietly, shrugging.

"No." Luke shook his head.

"You shouldn't even be the one apoligizing, Luke, I'm the one who should be sorry." Ashley sighed, nervously playing around with the ends of her hair. "I did something much worse than just yell some mean things."

"Yeah." Luke nodded, partially agreeing with her.

"If I could go back and just say no to Michael I would, I swear, I'm so sorry Luke - "

"You don't need to - "

"I have to - "

"Ashley." Luke said, cutting her off. "It's fine."

"No, Luke, it's not fine." Ashley said and stood up, beginning to pace around the room. "I never wanted to hurt you and I did and that's not okay and I feel awful, Luke, I haven't been able to stop thinking about you since all of this happened."

"It's fine." Luke repeated. He didn't really want to talk to Ashley about this right now, not when he was here in a hospital bed and still had no idea what he'd said to her the night before.

"No, it's - " This time Ashley was cut off by the door opening again and Michael walking in the room, surprisingly holding the hand of Ellie, Luke's cousin.

"Ellie?" Luke sat up quickly, not expecting to see her there.

"Lukey!" Ellie smiled when she saw her older cousin and ran over to the bed, climbing up on it so she could sit next to Luke.

"Hi, Ellie-Bean." Luke said, trying to put on a smile for her. He looked back up at Ashley, who was slowly backing away from Luke's bed and towards Michael. "We can talk later, okay?"

"Yeah." Ashley nodded.

"Are you okay? Mommy said you were hurt. Your mommy called my mommy and then she told me that you were here. I made her take me out of school and bring me here because I wanted to see you." Ellie rambled on and hugged Luke tightly, wrapping her arms around his neck.

"I'm alright now, El, thanks for coming to see me." Luke laughed softly, because it was almost impossible for him not to be happy whe Ellie was around.

Luke glanced over at Michael and Ashley, who had both taken a seat in the hospital chairs on the other side of the room, giving Luke and Ellie some space.

"Are you sure you're okay, Lukey? You look funny." Ellie said questionably, placing her hands on the sides of Luke's face to get a better look at him.

"Do I?" Luke asked, cocking his head to the side. He hadn't looked at himself at all since he'd woken up, he didn't know why he would look any different.

"Yes, but that's okay." Ellie giggled. "I like it."

"Good." Luke laughed, poking Ellie in the stomach and making Ellie giggle even more.

"I like your friend with the colorful hair." Ellie whispered, leaning in closer to Luke so Michael didn't overhear. "He was sad earlier, but I made him feel better."

"He was sad?" Luke whispered back. "Why?"

"I don't know." Ellie said, shaking her head. "He was crying. I told him the jokes you taught me to make him happy again."

"Good job." Luke said, giving Ellie a high five.

Ellie giggled again and poked one of Luke's cheeks repeatedly until he finally slapped her hand away.

"Auntie Liz says you're going to be in trouble when you get home." Ellie said teasingly, like she thought that it was funny. To a five year old girl this whole thing probably was funny, because she just didn't understand.

"Yeah, I probably will be." Luke said, having accepted the fact that he was going to be in a lot of trouble for a very long time because of this.

"What happened, Lukey? Why do you have to be here?" Ellie asked, pouting back at him.

"I just made a couple bad choices, Ellie-Bean, it's kind of hard to explain." Luke sighed. He didn't want to tell his little cousin, who looked up to him like he was the best thing in the world, that he'd gotten too drunk and ended up in the hospital with alcohol poisoning.

"Well don't make any more bad choices, Lukey, I don't like this place and I don't want to have to come see you here again." Ellie said and then hugged Luke again, resting her head on his chest.

"I won't, Ellie, I promise." Luke sighed, smoothing down Ellie's hair.

Luke heard the sound of a chair moving back on the floor and he looked up to see Michael and Ashley walking out of the room. Luke really hoped that he was imagining it, but it looked like the two of them were holding hands.

"Lukey?" Ellie whispered. "Why do you look sad? Why does Ashley look sad too?"

"We both just have a lot of stuff going on at the moment." Luke said, not wanting to go into too much detail for the sake of Ellie's little five year old brain.

"Aw, don't be sad, Lukey." Ellie whined, hugging him again.

"I'll try not to." Luke chuckled softly. He kissed the top of Ellie's forehead and then leaned back again, continuing to hold Ellie in his arms.

They spent the rest of the day there in the hospital bed until Ellie got exhausted and fell asleep on Luke's chest, not wanting to let go of him for even a second.
