Chapter 4A
A week passed in the blink of an eye.
Following Lynn's request, I accelerated my plan to travel to the Fel Continent.
A mission of immense difficulty.
"We'll break this problem down into smaller issues to solve them one by one." I began the important meeting in the special area of the library.
Everyone gathered in the room included Dahlia, Lynn, Daisy, and a mysterious man. Even knowing who the man in the perfect disguise was, I wasn't surprised or annoyed.
"Welcome to this special meeting, sir. As a newcomer, I hope you can introduce yourself briefly." I spoke calmly like a lecturer, but a subtle nervousness unconsciously crept beneath my words.
"It's quite an unannounced appearance, I apologize to everyone. I am Aster, a scholar from Vestri, a regular at the Amethyst Library. Fortunately, I met librarian Lynn today, who is presenting his research. I was curious and asked librarian Dahlia to allow me to participate in this presentation. It's a pleasure to meet everyone, especially the Grand Sorceress, Divris." The guest explained with utmost politeness.
He was tall, slender, yet healthy and graceful. His light blue eyes were like snowflakes. His hair, parted at the side, was almost completely gray. Despite the wrinkles on his face, he still retained a refined appearance. One could say Aster had the most beautiful aged face I had ever seen.
"Having another brain to help with the plan would be better, wouldn't it, Divris?" Lynn said casually.
"Because Mr. Aster begged so much, I had no choice but to agree," Dahlia said with a mixture of helplessness and annoyance in her eyes.
Daisy said nothing, but was captivated by his aura, jumping onto the lap of the stranger she'd just met, carefree and without a care, closing her eyes and falling asleep (undead don't sleep). But I think she was just drawn to his magic. I have a feeling this man is stealing all my friends.
So I hadn't anticipated this. Refusing him would be impolite and even more wrong from a moral standpoint. After all, he's helped Divris a great deal. In other words, it was a mistake and short-sighted of me not to inform him of this meeting sooner.
"Then I hope Mr. Aster will contribute his expertise to this 'research project'," I said, bowing my head as if apologizing.
"I will dedicate all my resources to this promising research, rest assured, madam."
The meeting proceeded very smoothly and systematically. Lynn presented the research process with utmost professionalism and confidence, as if he had done this many times before. Then, Dahlia continued with the actual situation in Fel. Daisy also readily shared her thoughts on how to deal with each difficulty.
"Entering Fel, specifically the Kingdom of Concordia, is very difficult; you need a travel permit. Obtaining a permit is also a time-consuming process. The quickest way is to rely on a neighboring country—Vestri," Dahlia explained.
"Luckily, Mr. Aster is a scholar from that country," Daisy said happily.
"Oh, I know many people from that kingdom too," Aster said, patting Daisy on the head "Miss Dahlia is right about this obstacle, but there's another factor that can't be overlooked: the travel permit could also be a letter of recommendation from a noble. Only nobles can provide such a letter of recommendation most quickly. It's worth mentioning that there was a period when the nobles of Vestri and Concordia signed peace treaties through marriage, so some nobles in Vestri were also from Concordia. Only the most trustworthy individuals were recommended by Vestri nobles to go to Concordia. From politicians, merchants, scholars... And that's the cover everyone needs, isn't it?" Aster continues.
The room fell silent for a moment. I looked at Aster, smiled, and asked,
"So, Mr. Aster, which cover do you think would suit me best?"
A mysterious smile quickly appeared on his lips.
A week before departure, I also had to settle everything at my mansion: handing over responsibilities and rearranging personnel. Dahlia helped me a lot, managing the three main facilities in my place: the Library, the Workshop, and the Greenhouse Nursery.
The agricultural produce would be harvested and stored in my spatial dimension as food reserves for the entire trip. The empty land after the harvest would be used to grow more flowers and herbs, expanding the scale of the potion research that Daisy brought.
Although Daisy would accompany me on the voyage to Vestri, I didn't want her to miss out on her research at home because she was eager to create elixirs and potions. It was a task I feared a young dragon like Daisy, at her age, would find tedious and boring. But I was wrong; she gradually became interested in brewing medicines and pharmaceuticals. She's a dragon fairy, one of the rare dragon species with high intelligence, knowing all languages, and possessing many advanced magical abilities, so this is hardly surprising.
Throughout, Lynn also contributed as an observer, understanding everything better than anyone else. He observed Daisy and sent me daily reports.
Although we haven't yet discovered the true nature of Daisy's power, we are all happy to fully accept her.
As for Lynn, besides creating the technique to seal the demonic aura, Daisy collaborated with me to create an illusion spell that completely changed Lynn's appearance to disguise him when he came to the human world.
Speaking of illusion spells, it's a complex spell requiring a deep understanding of space and the physical structure of each individual creature being enchanted. It's like scanning your body in 3D onto a computer and then using tools to alter it. The parts of the incubus's body will be transformed into a half-elf youth. The essence of this spell is simply bending light to create an illusory image. It's like a complete costume. The most labor-intensive part is the fine-tuning. It's a meticulous adjustment process to create a unique, personalized magical artifact. It's like tailoring clothes. An illusion tailor. Well, that's a cool name.
Thalos is an incubus with rather large dragon wings, a pair of beautiful spiral horns that exude an air of wisdom, and a long, strong, smooth-skinned reptile-like tail.
"Okay, what do you think Lynn would like?" I asked Daisy to choose an item to hold the illusion magic. It would be more convenient and flexible than manually chanting spells to maintain the illusion, which wouldn't be as stable or effective. And the artifact was researched and created for that reason. Its stability is unparalleled. And above all, with such a sophisticated and complex illusion magic, it's needed more than anything. It's unlikely anyone could see through that illusion. Well, there are a few exceptions, but you'd have to be really unlucky to encounter one.
"Rings, earrings, necklaces, belts... so many choices. I don't know what Lynn would like." Daisy covered her head with her front paws, looking very cute in her confusion.
"I believe Daisy has good taste. You choose something Lynn will love."
"I think this would suit him." Daisy chose a pair of earrings that looked incredibly stylish yet still sleek. Just imagining it made me think it would look amazing on Lynn. Because I was worried about my fashion sense for men, I needed someone else's advice. Dahlia was too busy with her management work, so only Daisy could help.
"I based it on Lynn's facial proportions.
"And so Daisy gave me a book on jewelry and how to style it. Books like that exist in this world? I thought to myself, both delighted and impressed. I'll have to rely on Daisy a lot again. It seems my companions are all very knowledgeable. There are things I don't know, and having someone to support me is a great blessing. I'm said to be a wise, knowledgeable, and insightful person, but I feel like I'm becoming a laughingstock compared to that aura.
"Oh, why does Divris look so sad?"
"Well, I'm terrible at men's fashion. And there are so many other things I don't know."
"Knowing what you lack motivates you to learn more about it, right?"
"Oh, Daisy knows how to encourage me so well. Thank you," I said happily. "Besides, I want Lynn to wear something really nice. He's still wearing the same outfit from the day he arrived. Even though he received clothes from the workshop, they look too ordinary. I want him to have new clothes, something he'll really enjoy wearing."
"That's right, humanity has a keen interest in fashion." Daisy pondered seriously, then boldly said, "Don't worry, I'll help you too.
"Daisy and I had another thing to do together.
Soon after, we realized that the sea voyage would be very long, so we also needed to set up a research cabin. That was an essential activity for a group of bookworms. We had so many research projects to do. So, an emergency meeting took place three days before departure.
"Bringing a research cabin onto the ship? Is that okay? The ship's rocking will be very uncomfortable," Dahlia said.
"That's right, is there any way to reduce the rocking?"
"A flying ship?" Daisy suggested.
"That would consume a lot of magic, Daisy. I'm afraid no one can cast a flying spell on the entire ship. Flying magic is also very dangerous and difficult to control," Lynn said.
Daisy didn't give up and continued to brainstorm.
"What about a wave-blocking barrier surrounding the ship?" Daisy continued to suggest.
"That's also possible, it doesn't require much magic to maintain. But there's a problem: the ship needs wind or an engine to move, the barrier would significantly reduce the shaking but it would also prevent the ship from moving," I explained.
Lynn was standing close to the window, deep in thought, looking out from the floating library, at the vast, book-filled Amethyst Library outside. At the same time, everyone looked at each other and then at me. All three of us had figured it out.
"You all figured it out!" I said proudly, smiling.
So I got scolded for checking on them at the wrong time. Being a teacher isn't always easy.
The magic was created by Divris herself; the mechanism behind this floating library was the answer to the safe laboratory on the ship. Maintaining that state of equilibrium required little magic and allowed for safe separation from the ship, without hindering any movement.
So I simply reviewed Divris's existing notes and rebuilt the onboard laboratory. The only difference, and the most challenging part, was creating a spherical frame to contain the room. This spherical frame would completely eliminate the ship's vibrations from entering the room, and my magic would only act as a spatial buffer, binding the frame to it.
Finally, I praised Daisy profusely for her tireless efforts in finding a solution.
And so we could safely conduct our experiments and research on a sailing ship.
A week after the meeting, the day of departure from the Xeros continent approached.
Aster had prepared the ship and necessary equipment for my departure.
"Are you sure you don't want to come along?" I asked Aster.
Both of them were standing before the largest seaport of the Necropolis. The cargo handling system at this port was no different from the old world I lived in. Divris's magic had contributed to building this system.
"Although I would like to, I think it's not the right time yet."
"Then when the time comes, please let me know in advance. I would be very happy to have you accompany me, esteemed king."
"Please don't use such formal language; there's no one around here."
Although I had read the novel, I was completely unaware of the relationship between Divris and the Undead King. They were closer than I thought. After all, Divris played a huge role in the development of science and technology in the Necropolis for almost 100 years. They must have become extremely close friends.
The Great Lich Harxon was no longer using his disguise magic. Before me was a pseudo-immortal, a true undead lord, entirely a white skeleton, wearing a tunic that emitted a massive aura of death magic. In the distance, my companions Lynn and Daisy stood on the boat, calmly gazing at the horizon, trying to find a ray of sunlight obscured by the magic of the Necropolis.
I've completed the disguise items so Lynn can move freely in human territory. But the undead dragon, Daisy, remains a significant challenge. Undead are easily detected in the kingdom of Concordia, a holy land, a devout nation that worships gods of light, the very opposite of the undead's nature. And now, I face an extremely difficult task: to create some kind of spell that can conceal the undead's death aura so Daisy can join us on our journey.
"That incubus boy is quite a marvel. And Daisy too, Divris has befriended so many interesting individuals without telling me." Although Aster's words didn't sound reproachful, I still felt uneasy.
"I'm sorry, I've been too busy. From now on, I'll report everything about the trip to you."
"That's alright, just remember to come back and visit me, and don't forget the council meeting."
"I know. Harxon, do you need me to send my regards to anyone? I believe you have some acquaintances in Vestri, don't you?"
Harxon handed me a beautifully patterned envelope sealed with navy blue wax and glitter.
"I'll miss you," Harxon said.
"I'm not leaving for good."
"You never know. Has anyone ever told you that you're very sentimental? Whatever the problem, I'll always be here, feel free to ask me for help."
I felt apprehensive because I knew almost nothing about this king. Did I deserve this support? And then, Harxon whispered in my ear.
"Don't be afraid, whether you are Divris or someone else, I always trust you. Do you believe in the oneness of souls between worlds? I believe Nihilus knows that."
With that, Harxon turned and left, leaving me with a great and lingering anxiety.
