I waited. And listened. It seemed as if the whole forest held it's breath in silence. But I couldn't hear anything.

Why couldn't I hear anything? The window was still wide open. If something happened, if there was a struggle, I would have heard something.

Unless there wasn't anything to hear.

What if they got to him first? There had been rumors flying around town of a new plant the monks at Mère's temple had created, a plant that could render those who wished to smell its scent unconscious. If those people had used it against Ansel... No, I couldn't think that far.

As quietly as I possibly could, I crept back towards the window, making sure to step back through my footprints in the snow.

"We can hear you, Arielle," called a low, deep voice from the window. A voice I had never heard before. I had to get away, I had to leave before—

A familiar insufferable chuckle sounded from inside the cabin.

"It's fine Arielle, you can come back inside," his voice barely concealing the laughter held behind it.

Infuriated, I trudged back towards the cabin. I didn't even bother to be quiet.

"Care to explain?" I said as I slammed the front door open.

"Well—"

"I can explain, Arielle,"

I turned to face yet another person in the cabin, and felt all the color drain from my face.
