Chapter 16

A year and six months after apocalypse

They left the deserted, two story house, ready to go back to the small neighborhood they took up residence in. Their neighbor's consisted of an older lady, maybe mid to late 40s, that power walked the perimeter each morning as her work out, and a young boy and his father. It was their turn to go out, forging for supplies. Whatever was found, was split amongst the three groups.

Sebastian was the one carrying the bookbag. She spun her knife around, laughing at what he had said. The sun was setting, meaning all threats of the apocalypse was nearly gone. Within the first few months, they had come to the realization that the mutants didn't walk outside during the night. They couldn't fathom why, since most times it was stereotypically outside due to skin conditions.

They were heading down the street, about a mile away from their housing edition. Then suddenly, Sebastian was gone. The snarls met her ears, but she was scared to see the monster they belonged to. She knew what this meant, but she wasn't able to face reality with the situation. She turned towards the scene, feeling the tears well up.

In front of her, Sebastian was getting torn apart. His screams mingled with her's, even though she didn't realize she was screaming. The infected dug its fingers into his stomach, dark blood spilling out fast and thick around the wound. It twisted its hand around, pulling a chunk away and tossing it aside as a fountain of the liquid filled the surrounding area. The fiend tore at his cheek with its teeth; the skin peeled away easily. It started to stretch away from the body at the end, and the monster ripped it away harshly, causing the tear to run up to the corner of the eye, leaving the socket visible for the world.

Sebastian's screams crescendoed, and she gripped her knife tighter, ready to kill the mutant. It lowered its ready, ripping into the slick intestines protruding from his stomach. She jumped forward, finally out of her initial shock.

"Run!" Sebastian rasped out between his hollers in pain. His head lolled off to the side as he continued to cry out in agony. His face was twisted in pain, and she hesitated to comply to his wishes. She opened her mouth, about to cry out that she couldn't leave him, when he interrupted her again.

"Just fucking run! You can't save me!" he tried to convince her again. The mutant stopped gorging on its fresh, alive meal long enough to gaze in her direction. "If you don't run, it will get you. Don't worry about me. I want this," he panted out. She froze under the monster's blank gaze. It soon turned back to ripping bits of flesh off of her fiance. Tears filled her eyes as she looked at his face once more.

"I love you, Sebastian," she sobbed. She turned around, sprinting away. She refused to look back, knowing seeing him so defeated and broken would carry her back to him. She missed the weak, relieved smile that graced his features.

"I love you too," he managed to whisper out as the remains of his life force drained out of him. He didn't care that she didn't hear it; he was just glad he could utter those four words before his end.

Blights. She thought to herself bitterly, scraping the tears away as she ran. I will call them Blights because they destroyed everything I loved.
