Chapter 26

"The sun is going down; we should probably find shelter soon," Alex advised. Sun nodded along, deep in thought about how she should be around Alex now. She felt with him finally confessing about his family, he'd be a bit more depressed now. She felt it was a part of her duty to assume his role as jokester and nice guy until he felt better again. Usually it was him who was keeping her around. Now it was her turn.

"Sounds like a plan!" she said in a chipper tone. She hopped over next to Alex, attempting to plaster a friendly grin on her face. It didn't work out, and it appeared extremely forced. Alex gave her a weird look.

"Are you okay?" Her smile became even more fake looking, and Alex shied away from her.

"Of course I am! Why wouldn't I be?" she asked in a cheery tone that held an edge of a threat.

"Well you don't seem like yourself..." Alex hesitated in saying, rubbing the back of his neck and hoping she wouldn't chew him out.

"No, I'm being 100% myself!" she argued in a sweet tone, her smile turning into more of a thinly veiled, teeth baring snarl.

"Not really... You're not a happy person," Alex pointed out to her as they made their way alone the side of the road they were currently traveling near.

"Shut the fuck up, Alex. I am a happy person," she bit out the two last words. Sun stopped trying to seem pleasant and paid attention to her surroundings, seeing a car sized dirt trail off the side of the road.

"What do you suppose that is, oh friendly goddess of the apocalypse?" Sun shot Alex a glare, ready to spring into action and hit him in the head. Remember, friendly jokester! She chanted to herself a few times. She threw out a chuckle for him before planting her hands on her hips.

"I don't know! Let's go find out!" She started forward a few steps, turning around to grab Alex's hand with a grin before starting forward again. Sun was glad her face was away from him. Her cheeks were turning a dark shade of pink. I'm holding his hand! She dragged him along the path, refusing to turn around as he called out to her. She ignored him, continuing down the road. Alex didn't stop her, a sly smirk on his face.

He knew what had happened to her. Instead, Alex brought her hand up to his mouth, laying a gentle kiss against the back of it. Sun was quick to rip out of his grasp, balling her hand in to a fist. She smacked the side of his head. He ignored the pain, grinning at seeing her face flushed beet red, knowing it wasn't from the cooling air.

"Stop fooling around! We need to go see whatever is at the end of this trail!" she sputtered out in a high pitched tone, spinning around on her heels and starting off down the road once more. Alex snickered quietly behind her, soon following after her. She sure knows how to lighten my mood. Even if she doesn't realize it. He mused silently to himself, subconsciously allowing a slightly adoring smile to slide onto his face.

They travelled a ways along the road before coming to a small cabin. Sun instantly lightened her footsteps, grabbing for her gun slung over her shoulder. She made her way to one of the clouded, broken windows, peaking in to scope out the place. She made her way to another window to repeat the same action. Alex broke off to another side, bring his ear to the door and listened carefully for any noises. Sun bent down, trotting towards where Alex was stationed.

"I checked a few windows. I didn't see anything in there," she whispered to him. Alex nodded his head in a silent response. He listened a bit longer to check for any sounds before jerking his head towards the door. Alex grabbed his pistol from his waist band, stepping back and readied his aim. Sun stayed hunched against the door. She grabbed her gun in one hand, wrapping the other one around the door knob. She nodded discreetly before turning the knob and pushing the door in.

Both leaped inside, their backs to each other as they scanned their part of the cabin. It was small. The cabin only contain a single room which conjoined as a kitchen, bedroom, and dining room. Everything was kept simplistic, leaving only the basic necessities for each area. A queen sized bed for the bedroom with a single cedar chest rest off to the side. For the kitchen, a fridge, oven, and sink with cabinets for storage. Lastly for the dinning room, a round table with three chairs set around it.

"Cozy," Sun said shortly, shrugging her pack off and tossing it onto the bed. Alex grunted in agreement before taking his bag off as well. Sun set her gun over her shoulders once again while Alex dropped his rifle and pistol onto the cedar chest. Sun started rifling through the cabinets, pulling out various canned foods and examining the stock.

"Bingo!" she cried out. Alex looked up from searching through his bag, a half eaten granola bar hanging from his mouth.

"What is it?" he asked around his snack. Sun beamed towards him before pulling out a white and blue paper bag that read 'granulated sugar'. Alex shot her an apprehensive look.

"Are you sure that's something you should be putting on wounds?" he questioned. Sun gave him a dirty look before heading towards the dinning table.

"It's perfectly fine! Bring my bag over here. Oh, wait a moment." Sun rushed back over to the storage cabinets, searching through the remaining ones along with the drawers. "Sweet, I was hoping to find one," she said happily, pulling out a red box.  Alex sat at one of the seats, putting Sun's bag in another. Sun placed the box on the table before picking her pack up and setting it on the floor. Instead, she took its spot in the seat and opened the red plastic box.

"Well this is disappointing," Sun muttered, picking up yellowed gauze and an almost empty bottle of peroxide. She put the yellowed gauze back into the box before pushing it away. She grabbed her bag, unzipping it from the ground and pulling out her medical supplies. She then opened the sugar bag, readying it for use.

Sun undid Alex's bandaging, tossing the old into the red box. She then poured some of the remaining peroxide onto some cloth, rubbing and dabbing the bite like she had with the water. This time, she got a lot more hisses in protest. She quickly shushed the big baby she was tending to. Once the peroxide had quit bubbling and dried, sun reached for a handful of sugar, sprinkling over the wound.

"So, what exactly does the sugar do?" Alex asked as he watched her work. She grabbed some bandaging, placing it over the wound before grabbing her gauze.

"The sugar is supposed to suck the water from the wound. Bacteria uses water to spread and grow, so less water, less bacteria," she said, picking up his and wrapping the gauze around. She placed her supplies off to the side, smiling at her handy work. "Well that's done. It should do a lot better now with the peroxide and sugar!" She looked up to see Alex staring at her intently. Her smile slowly dropped.

"Is something the matter? Is something making you un-" she broke off as he reached forward, his good hand clasping her cheek. He leaned forward. Sun stilled, her cheeks flaming up as his lips met her's in a gentle, hesitant way. The warmth of his mouth sent a current running through her body, matching the heated feeling in her face. Her heart rate sped up to an excited speed as she relished in the feeling of his lips against her's. It didn't matter that they were slightly chapped from the cold weather. Alex kissed her.

It was a small, sweet peck that didn't last long. But, the few seconds lasted an eternity to her. Alex pulled away slowly, leaving his hand to cradle her cheek. His eyes flicking back and forth between her's, looking for an hint as to how she felt about his move. Her emotions remained unknown to him as she continued to silently stare at him, her mouth parted slight. He took in her flushed cheeks. Shit, did I do something wrong? Alex pulled his hand away from her cheek, rubbing it awkwardly against the back of his neck.

"Oh my god, Sun, I'm so sorry. I didn't even ask if you were okay with this, and I just kind of dove in. I'm so awkward; I'm so sorry. I don't know if you even like me like that, or if you even considered thinking of me like that. I probably just misread everything that was going on. This is all my fault, I'm so sorry, please don't hate me. I don't want things to be awkward between us because I made a move on you that you didn't wa-" Sun cut Alex off as she started forward, wrapping her arms around his neck, and she brought their lips together again.

Alex froze at the sudden turn of events before joining in himself. He wrapped one arm around her waist, the other one snaking through her hair to grip it. Neither bothered asking for entrance, the war already breaking loose as their tongue twisted and turned. Alex's hand wound out of her hair, both his hands reaching down to hook under her butt. In a quick motion, Sun's legs were wrapped around Alex's hips as he stood up. Sun took some weight off his injured arm, tightening her grip around his hips.

He made their way over to the bed, pushing the back packs off in order to allow Sun's back to hit the mattress. Their lips disconnected for a bit of time, and Sun let out a breathy laugh while Alex cracked a sly grin. Then they mashed together again, the fight for dominance between their tongues starting once again as Alex propped his weight above Sun. Sun won, dragged her tongue across the roof of his mouth slowly before exploring around. Alex separated their kiss once again, nipping and kissing down her neck.

Moans slipped out from Sun's mouth, and Alex grinned against her neck, continuing his work. Her nimble fingers worked their way under his shirt, feeling the plains of his abdomen. She scraped down his stomach, biting her lip when he nipped a little too hard, bringing his lips down to the same place. She was sure there would be a hickey there later. He pulled away, landing one last kiss on her lips before flopping down onto the bed next to her.

"Well, that was unexpected," she breathed out airily.

"Yes it was. You're a lot better kisser than I expected you to be," Alex teased, grabbing her hand and threading his fingers with her's. She slammed his hand into the mattress once.

"I fucking hate you."

"No you don't, otherwise you wouldn't have kissed me," Alex replied in a teasing voice, going as far to imitate kissy noises. Sun growled, rolling her eyes at her childish partner.

"You're so irritating," She grumbled out, turning onto to her side towards Alex and tucking her hand below her head. He turned towards her, mimicking her position as he brought their hands up between them, fiddling with her fingers.

"But you think I'm great," he whispered to her. And she did.
