Chapter 27
The next morning, Sun was up early, grabbing both their bags and dumping out the contents of each. She sat cross-legged on the ground to allow for more space as she spread the materials out in front of her. Alex goes on the left, mine go on the right. She muttered internally as she pushed Alex's backpack to her left and her's to the right. She took in inventory of the food and water supply they carried.
"Three bottles of water, five canned foods, two granola bars and a chocolate bar..." she mumbled, sorting the food into two piles. Each got a bottle of water, two food cans, and a granola, leaving the chocolate bar and a lone bottle and can. She put the chocolate bar into her food pile.
"I got this myself, and you stole it. It's mine," she growled to herself, glancing over at Alex's sleeping figure on the bed. He had pulled one of the pillows to his chest, using an end to tuck under his head. She focused back to the task at hand, looking between the bottle and the can. He eats a lot more than I do... She reasoned, pushing the can into his pile and the bottle into her's. And it's not like I wouldn't share if he got thirsty... Sun packed the separated consumables into the designated pack before looking over the remain tools.
There was a sudden sleepy noise released from the bed. Sun looked up in time to see Alex sit up really fast, his eyes alert. He visibly relaxed when he noticed her sitting on the ground, staring up at him blankly.
"Uhm, morning," he greeted awkwardly, his voice raspy from sleep. Sun nodded in response before looking back down at the materials in front of her.
"How did you sleep?" she asked, knowing full well that she had been out cold the entire night and had no clue. Alex shifted his position on the bed to get more comfortable. The comforter pooled around his hips. He scratched his head a bit as he looked off in thought.
"I didn't wake up once," he said, amazement lining his tone. Sun allowed a small smile to appear as she started sorting.
"That's good." Give me the pocket knife. He keeps the map. Sun pulled out the photo, looking at it. She observed everyone gathered, taking in their grinning, excited faces as they all acted goofy in front of the camera. There was a quiet thump behind her and arms snaked around her waist. A weight landed on her chin and she stiffened, a deep blush rushing over her face. The form behind her stilled.
"Sorry... Are we... Are we not this close yet?" Alex asked, hesitancy laced his voice as he lifted his chin away from her shoulder.
"I don't know... Are we?" Sun questioned back dumbly. Alex shuffled a bit uncomfortably, but took her immobility as a good sign.
"I don't know... This isn't something I can decide by myself!" Alex complained. Silence followed, and Sun's attention focused on the items in front of her. Think of something to change the topic!
"Hey!" Alex started, pointing towards her pile. "Why is my pocket knife in your pile?" She sat quietly for a moment.
"Because it can relate to my stabby attitude," Sun whispered. Horror over took her features as she twisted around to look at Alex. "Oh my god, I'm turning into you!" He smiled devilishly at Sun.
"That is a good thing. Come to the dark side, my child," he responded cheekily. She shot him a mean look.
"That's a good thing," she mimicked him angrily, turning around to toss some wound up rope into her pile. Without question, she stuck all the make-shift medical supplies into her pile. She placed more useless things into Alex's pile like the can opener and the thin blankets they kept.
"Why do you get more important things?" he whined, leaning around her with a pout to grab the photo she left in front of her.
"Because the items in your pile more adequately represent your role in this journey," Sun stated, sending him an apathetic grin.
"Are you calling me useless?!" Alex sputtered out. Sun finished sorting their things, packing them up in the correct bags.
"Yes," she put bluntly. She zipped up the bags and unraveled Alex's hands from her waist in order to stand up. Alex scoffed behind her.
"Rude," he muttered to himself, standing up with her. Sun tossed Alex his bag before slinging her own around her shoulders.
"I did save your life two times now! I'm not completely useless," he pointed out as Sun went to the bedside to reach for her gun. He grabbed his guns too, tucking his pistol instantly into his jeans.
"And you have more guns than I do. Why are you complaining about me carrying the more important things?" she shot back, raising a challenging eyebrow as she headed for the front door.
"That's completely off topic!" Alex complained. "I'm trying to prove my point that I'm not useless! I don't care about you carrying the better items! I'm not useless!"
"I'm sorry for ruining your man ego. You're very useful," Sun teased over her shoulder as she went out the front door. Alex followed her out, muttering under his breath.
"You bet your ass I'm useful." She shook her head with a a small smile.
"Come on, you moron. We're wasting daylight."
