Chapter 30

Sun moaned, throwing her arm over her eyes as bright light streamed in through the window. It hit her square in the face, disturbing her peaceful sleep. She rolled onto her side, the blankets and her coat rattling as she moved. She snuggles closer to the warm heat source next to her and sighed in content.

"Ready for another round already?" a sleepy voice said beside her. She grunted, shoving her face closer into his bare side.

"Don't ruin this already, Alex," she answered back, her voice muffled. He chuckled, taking his right arm and wrapping it around her. They stayed silent for a bit, content with the comforting atmosphere. Sun couldn't help but wonder about what she had done. I've made a mistake. I got close to someone. It will happen again. I don't think I'll be able to handle another one. She pulled away from Alex, not facing him as she finished putting the rest of her clothes on.

"Sun? What's the matter?" he asked worriedly as he sat up behind her. Sun yanked her coat off the top of the blankets, only to have her wrist grabbed firmly by Alex. She kept her eyes glaring silently at the floor as she froze.

"Talk to me," Alex said gently, using his other hand to grasp her chin and tugged it, so she looked at him.

"I told myself I wouldn't get attached. I didn't want to get hurt again. But, I know it's going to happen again. Something is going to happen and you'll leave me, and I'll be alone again..." she drifted off, her eyes darting away from his gaze, embarrassed with her confession.

"I won't leave you. Ever. I'll be here to protect you forever," he vowed strongly. She snapped her eyes back up to him in confusion, watching as his eyes lit up internally with determination. She couldn't help the hope swelling in her chest, but her pessimism wouldn't let it go that easily. Alex moved his hands to cup both of her cheeks, feeling the fight leave Sun.

"How can you be so sure? What if you die?" she questioned, her vision blurring as unwanted tears filled her tear ducts. She went to wipe them away, but Alex was already on the job, taking his thumbs and carefully wiping them again.

"Because I have you I need to care for." Sun smiled meekly at him. Alex's gaze softened into a loving one before turning serious again. "But, if for some reason I break my promise, I want you to run, okay? Don't worry about me, just run." Sun brought her hands up to grip his wrists, shaking her head ferociously.

"No. Because I know it won't happen. I know you won't break your promise. I won't let you break your promise to me. Whether you like it or not, you're stuck with me," Sun proclaimed. Alex started forward, locking his lips onto her's.

Things started slow as they moved in sync. Sun wrapped her arms around his neck, scooting closer to him to close the gap between them. Alex had the same idea, wrapping his hands under her butt and lifting her into his lap. Alex grunted at the contact, and Sun gave him one last peck before pulling away with a sly smile on her face.

"Maybe you should get dressed and take care of your morning wood before we go anywhere," she teased. Alex smirked in response.

"If you'll take care of it for me?" he answered innocently. Sun flicked his nose, sliding off his lap and standing up.

"Just because we had sex, doesn't mean you get a free 'get to be a fuckboy' pass." She crossed her arms, raising an eyebrow. She turned, gathering their things as Alex moved around behind her, grumbling under his breath.

With Alex dressed, and their things packed and ready to go, Sun peaked her head out of them are shift door they made for the tree house. When she didn't see anything around, she grabbed their bags, dropping them to the ground. She threw her gun over her head, adjusting the strap so it laid comfortably over her chest. She started down first, the rickety wood cutting painfully into her palms. She ignore that last few steps, letting go of the wood and jumping backwards to land on her feet on the ground. Alex climbed down, mimicking her movements. Sun grabbed the bags, handing Alex his as they started off once again.

They walked a few miles in silence, enjoying the quiet, serene environment of the nature around them. Sun's thoughts started spinning around in her mind, recalling the conversation that they had, all the promises they made.

"Alex?" she asked suddenly. He hummed in response, letting her know he was listening. "What happens if I can't run?" She didn't need to explain herself for Alex to get what she was asking. He frowned a bit before turning to look away from her.

"We'll never find out because I'm not putting you into that position," he evaded. Sun looked down dejectedly at the ground. It wasn't the answer she was looking for. She didn't know exactly what she was looking for, but an evasion sure wasn't it.

"Okay," she answered shortly. Silence ensued once more, but Sun couldn't help but think up scenarios of that case. Well, I guess it's just a conversation for another day...
