As I was walking deeper into the hallway, the whirring sound came back on again, except this time, a whole lot more louder.
I grimaced at the sharp pitches it was emitting that I didn't notice before; I placed my hands over my ears as I stared straight ahead with my eyebrows slanted upward. "Uhhhh...who's doing that...? Stop..." I groaned with a taut voice at the darkness.
The sound then stopped and I heard a soft, yet loud BA-ANG! following it from my left. I turned to that direction, landing my eyes on what seemed like a work room that took up my whole sight.
It was a rectangular room with blue-shaded lights illuminating the whole area. In the centre back of the room was a long desk that was against the wall and spread out parallel to it. In the middle front of the desk was chair and on the desk seemed like numerous scraps and chunks of metals and alloys. Sitting on the chair was Alek.
And he had a flat, annoyed look; he was wearing a black shirt and black pants and black shoes that all had light blue designs.
I caught myself gawking at him. "Uhhhhooooohhhh..." I felt my heart beat rising and my stomach squirming around. I just made him mad, did I? Oh no...
I then saw his eyes darting upward, looking ahead of me.
I decided to follow his eyes, so I gazed behind my shoulder.
Behind me was another room, but this one seemed more like an office than a workplace. The room had a warm colour shade to it with the orange-tinted lights. The desk was shorter and brown and was located in the centre of the room; against the back walls of the room was a huge bookshelf that held countless books and other knick-knacks. And sitting behind the desk was Mr. Jekyll.
He had a sly facial expression with his hands interlaced on the desk; he was wearing from what I could see a black long-sleeved shirt with orange designs on the edge.
"Ummm..." I felt anxiety and confusion rising in me What is going on? What is this place? What are they doing here?
"Brynne, sit down," I heard my teacher tell me.
I darted my eyes over to him since I was gazing out into space.
He extended a hand out towards me. I looked down in front of his desk but saw no chair. Suddenly, the floor swallowed itself to form a perfect, circular hole; a circular cushion then popped back up from the hole and began hovering above the closing ground.
"Whoa," I gasped underneath my breath. I cautiously made my way from the dark hallway over to Mr. Jekyll's room; my pink footprints ended as I stepped up to the orange glowing tile flooring of the room.
I carefully sat on the hovering chair; luckily, my feet were able to touch the floor, so I was able to keep my balance.
"Brynne," Mr. Jekyll started in his Philadelphian accent, "I am glad that you found this place. I was hoping you would."
"Wh-what, what is this place?" I asked him, staring at his eyes so that I could maintain eye contact with him and not go wondering around, like one would do if they were lying.
"This is the base of HEROES a.k.a. High school Esoteric Regulation Of Excelling Students. You are the top student in grade ten so therefore, you are the chosen one for the sophomore position in HEROES," he began explaining to me nonchalantly.
"What is this though?" I began make hand motions by revolving my hands around each other. "I mean, what do I do--"
"Good question, Brynne." He smiled a me. "Here, our mission is to protect our school."
I made a disgusted look that I should've kept to myself. "Why do we need to protect...school?" I want to destroy it, like every single other kid in the world!
"You must be wondering that you want to do the complete opposite, right?" He made a jokingly facial expression.
"Errr...yeah..." I said slowly.
"Well, we aren't here for the education's sake. We are here to protect the people who rely on this school, come here everyday. You might not know, but there is someone out there wanting to destroy this school not because they're sick of homework." He propped his elbows on the tabletop.
"So why do they want to destroy it? Too many tests?" I chuckled nervously at my own joke.
Mr. Jekyll shook his head slowly while keeping that smirk on his face. "No, because there's something underneath this school that he wants. It's something all special villains want."
My eyes flew open. That's what I call villains who have supernatural powers in my stories: special villains! "Do you mean...evil people with supernatural abilities?"
"Yes." He seemed calm conversing about this topic.
"Wait, that's real?" I was beginning to doubt what's considered reality and fiction.
"Yes, it is real: the supernatural realm is real. Superpowers are real."
"Ohhhh!" I leaned my head back, starting at the orange lights. "That's so cool!"
"This special villain's goal is to destroy the building of the school to get what's underneath," I heard Mr. Jekyll continuing. "He's been attacking ever since a year ago. We've been successful until our best fighter graduated." He sighed. "Why did he have to be a senior?"
I straightened back up. "So what's underneath the school that this evil dude wants?"
"There's this machine, it's called 'The Machine of the World.' It's from Sweden since the creator of it was Swedish--everything that's supernatural is from Sweden since the one who made the supernatural is Swedish. He made the supernatural real, but the government didn't like it since the specials were unpredictable and stronger than them. The Father of the Supernatural couldn't use the last power he created on anyone else, so he placed it in a machine and casted it out over to the newly formed state that bringing in specials from Sweden, which is Lanston. And yes, that's the state we're in. And it's known that whoever finds this machine will get that power. And whoever finds that machine, along with the key that gives access to it, will gain infinite power."
I leaned closer to him, excited to know more about what he's talking about since this was my kind of topic. "What type of power?"
"Inverse Omnipotence," he told me gravely.
My eyes widen as I leaned back. "The power to make anything impossible!"
"Yes...you know about supernatural abilities?" He looked at me with an inquiring look.
"Yes!" I threw my hands in the air. "I love them!" I write about them!
He rose his eyebrows. "That's good to know! Unfortunately, we...don't have supernatural abilities. Instead, we use gadgets, weapons, and vehicles to fight."
"Oh..." I felt slightly disappointed that we didn't have any superpowers; then I made a connection. "Were...were kids here carrying them around today? The weapons and all?" I pointed to the tabletop.
"Actually, they were! That's good that you were able to see the weapons, means that you are meant to join HEROES."
I shrugged. "Well, I mean, they were out there in the open, no one could've missed them, but it seemed like they weren't even there at all according to the others!"
Mr. Jekyll leaned across the table and said lowly, "That's because the weapons were created so that they are only visible to the members of HEROES and specials; no one else can see them."
"Oh...so no one saw the gun and holster and missiles?"
"Nope..." He began leaning back gradually. "Only you. And me. And the others here."
"Wow," I muttered under my breath. "That's so cool."
He smiled big. "That's so that no one will panic if they see such type of items around them."
"That's actually a really good idea." I pointed at me with a smirk while nodding.
"That's why we created them that way. So you know what's going on?"
"Uh, you want me to recap all you've just said?" I pointed to myself.
"Yes, so that there's no misunderstandings here." He rested against his chair with his arms crossed.
"Okay, so I'm in HEROES which is an acronym; the mission is to protect the school from some special villain who wants to destroy the school because there's a machine underneath it; the machine is Swedish and will give the opener Inverse Omnipotence, which is what the villain wants; all of the weapons, suits, and that stuff can only be seen by us and specials for safety purposes."
"Good, you're a good listener." Mr. Jekyll nodded his head with his bottom lip sticking out with unstable approval. "I think you're ready to get into the routine."
"Whoa, wait, but what am I suppose to do here and--"
"Hen!" my teacher called out to whatever was beyond me. "Come get..." He dropped his eyes on me. "We need a codename for you."
"Her nickname can be Katt," I heard a familiar voice say from behind me as I heard the lovely clop, clop sounds of hard shoes against smooth flooring come to a stop.
I gazed behind my shoulders and my eyes widen. Behind me was Andrea dressed in all black with purple designs; her hair was up in a high ponytail and her hands were on her hips; she had a serious facial expression as she was looking at Mr. Jekyll. She then looked down at me and give me her warm, normal smile.
I smiled back as I heard the teacher say, "Brynne, do you approve of that codename?"
I turned back around to face him. "Katt? I love it! Yeah, totally!"
"Because you love cats and Norway," I heard Andrea whispered to me.
"You know me too well," I muttered back to her playfully.
"Alright, Hen, why don't you take Katt to her room and fill her in on the daily routine, eh?" Mr, Jekyll asked of her.
"Will do, Poncho." I sensed her looking down at me. "Come on, Katt, let's go."
I got up and walked over next to Andrea. "Thanks, Mr. Jekyll."
He nodded his head. "Thank you, for joining HEROES." He winked at me. "And you can call me Poncho."
"That's his codename," my friend added on.
"Okay, thanks...Poncho." I then turned around.
Instead of seeing the hallway, it seemed like it disappeared and the room completed itself. There was a metal door with a button on the wall that was next to it.
I followed Andrea over to the door. She pressed on the button for longer than usual. The button glowed purple and the door made hissing sounds as it began to be lifted up, like a curtain revealing a stage.
We both sauntered over to the other side as my eyes widen with awe.
I was in a massive room that was all white with light blue lines that outlined the creases of the room. Deeper in the room, the left wall was completely made out of glass. Next to me on the left side was the wall that seemed like it came from the entrance of the building, well I hoped was the way to the entrance or exit of the building. On the other side on the right side was a wall with two arched passageways: one that lead to the outside due to the bright sunlight that was coming in; another to what seemed like a hallway. Above those was a second story that had more arch-shaped doors. In the middle of the room were two tables: one that looked like for eating and another for conversing due to what was on top of them. On the other side of the room from where we came out from was a huge arch that seemed like it also led to the outside.
"So this is the main room," Andrea told me. "And this is your room..." She began walking across the room, under to the arch.
I followed her through it, ending up in an enclosed hallway, reminding me of a hallway that belonged in a ship due to the colours and style. "Wait, what do you mean by 'room?'"
"The room where you'll be staying in." She began walking down the right side of the hallway.
"Staying in‽" I cried as I walked behind her. "I'm gonna be staying here? Like in sleeping here?" I was not expecting this.
She looked at me from behind her right shoulder. "Yeah! Don't worry, all your stuff is there, so it's like as if you're at home." She then turned left and stopped in front of another door. She looked down at me as I walked up next to her, in front of the button that was next to the door. "Press the button."
"Uh, okay." I pushed the button and held it there like how I saw Andrea doing it. The button began glowing pink instead of purple and the door lifted itself off the ground. "Cool!" I walked in front of her and sauntered into the room.
It was this time squared-shaped with a bed on the right side of the room, protruding to the middle of the room. Next to it, close to me was a dresser with drawers. Across from the bed was a desk with a chair, next to the desk, close to my left was a closet and across from me was a window.
I gazed at the desk, where something on it caught my eye. "Hey, my iPad!" I ran over to it and opened it up, seeing the notifications I've missed. "It's here! I left it in the mezzanine!"
"That's because all of your stuff is now here!" I heard Andrea tell me from behind.
I closed my iPad and gazed down at the desk, which had all of my school items along with my other items that belonged to my desk back at home. I turned around to face her slightly. "Thanks!"
"Yea, no prob." She smiled. "So, Katt--"
"You can call me Bree, don't worry," I told her.
She shook her head. "No, no, here, we call each other by our codenames. I'm Hen--" She pointed to herself. "--you're Katt." She pointed at me.
"Okay..." I nodded my head uncertainly. "Why are you called Hen?"
Andrea shrugged as she sat on the edge of my bed. "Because, I'm the one who looks over you three to see if you guys are in order, y'know, like how Mother Hen looks over her chicks?"
I turned around completely, plopping myself on the black, hovering swivel chair. "Ohhhh...yeah, I can see why you're named Hen and not Mother." I chuckled at the thought of that as I spun around to face her.
"Hehe, yeah..." She nodded.
Then another question popped into my mind, one I was quite hesitant to ask, but I did anyways. "Hey, um, you know Alek, the new Russian kid...?"
"Yea, why?"
"Is he here...in this team...?" I braced myself for the answer.
"Yeah, he's in the junior position since he's a junior," she replied. "He's the mathematician of the team; his codename is Russia."
I shocked to hear that he was actually part of a the team and not just some hallucination I saw back in the hallway. "Oh wow... And you're in the senior position?"
"Yup." She nodded her head. "And you're sophomore."
"Yeah, I know that." I shrugged. "Who's freshman?"
"Cade--you know him?"
My eyes widen. "Oh yeah...yeah, I know him." That explains the missiles. "What's his position and all?"
"He's the pilot, takes care of flying the aircrafts and launching missiles and all. His codename is Freshman," she answered calmly.
I rose my eyebrows. "That's his codename?" I was quite disappointed that he had such a lame codename. "Not something like 'Pilot' or 'Blaster' or something along those lines?"
"We can't because we don't want to get confused with orders and codenames."
"Oh...okay, that makes sense." I nodded my head. "Why's Mr. Jekyll's codename Poncho? Just curious."
"Because one of the first members back called him 'Poncho' thinking it was 'Head Poncho' instead of 'Head Honcho,' since that was his original codename. And it stuck around, I guess!" She giggled at what she just said, putting her hand to her mouth.
"I think that's a cool codename though!" I nodded with a smirk.
"Yea, better than 'Freshman!'" Andrea exclaimed.
"Definitely!"
Then we began laughing.
